The World Wide Web source code auction ended yesterday, and the NFT version of the source code (1990-1991) was finally sold for a little over US$5.4 million.
The auction was initiated by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the father of the World Wide Web, and officially opened on June 23 with a starting price of US$1,000.
This NFT work called "This Changed Everything" consists of four parts:
- Source code file with original timestamp (1990.10.03-1991.8.24), containing 9555 lines of code and original HTML documents to guide early users to use the web. The code covers the implementation of three languages and protocols (HTML, HTTP, URL) invented by Sir Tim.
- A 30 minutes and 25 seconds video showing the code writing process in the form of animation;
- Sir Tim uses Python to create a complete code poster based on the original file;
- A letter written by Tim Berners-Lee records the code creation process.

I sold an image I made using Python to show that the source code is posted on the wall. What does it look like with my signature. If they think it’s inappropriate for me to sell NFT posters, what about selling a book? I have published books and made money, but it hasn’t affected the free and open nature of the Internet. It’s the same now. same."
He said: "Whether it is an artwork or a digital artwork like this, NFT is the latest game changer in this field, and it is also the most suitable form of ownership at present. The NFT form is an ideal way to package the origin of the web."

It is reported that all funds raised in this auction will be used to support the activities of Tim Berners-Lee and his wife.
