Only two weeks after the Linux kernel 5.13 stable version was released, the first Linux kernel 5.14 release candidate (RC) has been born. On July 11, Linus Torvalds released Linux 5.14-rc1, and its two-week window consolidation period has ended.

Linus Torvalds said that Linux 5.14-rc1 version is already available for public testing. This version includes approximately 13k submissions from approximately 1,650 developers, and AMD GPU hardware has undergone a lot of changes. In addition, this version removes the legacy IDE code, and now all IDE support is based on libata.

Like all new kernel versions, Linux 5.14 will bring driver updates to support more hardware devices. In addition, the new version also has improvements in file system, architecture, networking, scheduling, virtual machines, and of course documentation and tool updates.

The final version of Linux kernel 5.14 should be released at the end of August or early September. As usual, it depends on how many candidate versions there are in the entire development cycle.

Students who want to test this version can download Linux 5.14-rc1 from the kernel.org website. But this is a pre-release version and is not suitable for use on production machines.

Linus Torvald said, "In general, I don't think this version brings any huge surprises. In terms of scale, this seems to be a very regular version. We expect this to be a beautiful and peaceful release cycle, but the future You can't predict it."
