The Apache Way is a reference, but we still have to get out of our unique My Way. ———Pan Juan
ApacheCon is the official global series of conferences of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). As a prestigious open source feast, ApacheCon has attracted much attention in the open source community and is also one of the well-known activities in the early days of the open source movement.
As early as 1998, before the establishment of ASF, ApacheCon had attracted participants at all levels to explore "tomorrow's technology" in more than 300 Apache projects and their different communities. Also in this session, developers who developed HTTPD services gathered together and decided to establish the Apache Software Foundation.
ApacheCon is held once a year, usually in Europe or North America. It is an excellent opportunity for Apache developers to communicate, discuss, and meet offline. It is also a rare occasion for sharing ideas and exciting ideas. Through hands-on practice, keynote speeches, actual case studies, training, hackathons, etc., showcase the latest development and emerging innovations of the Apache project.
This year, in order to better serve the fast-growing Apache users and contributors in the Asia-Pacific region, the ApacheCon Organizing Committee and the Apache Software Foundation are pleased to announce that the first ApacheCon online conference for the Asia-Pacific region will be held in August 2021. Held online from 6th to 8th.
In order to let everyone know more about open source and ApacheCon Asia, SegmentFault will interview some Track Chairs or conference lecturers to let you know the stories behind the preparations for the conference and the stories of these experts.
Today, what we bring to you is our interview with Pan Juan, the only female Apache Member in China.
The following is the content of SegmentFault’s interview with Pan Juan:
Pan Juan
My identity in open source is the only female Apache member in China, the PMC of the ShardingSphere project, and the mentor of Apache brpc. In terms of work, SphereEx is the co-founder of SphereEx. As an open source infra commercial technology company, SphereEx welcomes students who love open source and are concerned about distributed databases/middleware/governance to join!
The story of Juan Pan’s first exposure to open source
I first came into contact with open source in early 2018. At that time, I was working for JD.com. The company wanted to promote the ShardingSphere project to Apache. At that time, it had a certain reputation in the open source community, but there was still no good model of community cooperation. It advances Apache, and this is my open source journey.
When participating in open source and contributing to the Apache community, what are the personal and company gains?
There are actually many gains. Personally speaking, there have been more opportunities for communication in open source and technology, including using GitHub and code to communicate and make friends, and continue to expand my personal and project vision and development way. On the other hand, we are also doing better and better in open source, so we established our own open source commercialized commercial company. In general, open source has a very big promotion effect on me, open source projects, and my company.
Pan Juan understands "The Apache Way"?
When it comes to this, everyone may think of the points elaborated on the Apache official website for the first time. From my personal point of view, I also support the "The Apache Way" stated on the Apache official website. I think it is a guiding principle and one. This methodology, we don’t necessarily have to conform to each one 100%, but it is the guiding ideology for every project, every mentor, and every open source person to enter the Apache Foundation. I also think that every project and every open source person will have a lot of different practical experiences when they practice The Apache Way, so I think The Apache Way is a kind of reference, but we still have to get out of our own unique My Way .
Pan Juan and ApacheCon Asia
I am the producer of INCUBATOR TRACK. If you read the introduction of INCUBATOR TRACK, you will find that we have many topics. First of all, we invited Justin Mclean, the chairman of the Apache incubator, a member of the Apache Foundation, and the tutor of Dubbo & RocketMQ and other open source projects. The topic he brought to everyone was: How to make the correct release in the INCUBATOR project? There will be a lot of dry goods in the content, which is very important for all projects that enter Apache. Later, there will be two graduated projects, DolphinScheduler and APISIX. They will introduce the Apache Way along the way to their community. I think this is also very meaningful. The following topics are all the projects that INCUBATOR is incubating. They will introduce some technologies at this stage and some ways of how to govern the community, including big data and Key Value storage technologies. This is for everyone who wants to know about the transformation of technology. , Or how to incubate the INCUBATOR project will be helpful, so I highly recommend everyone to pay attention to the INCUBATOR TRACK.
Join us in ApacheCon Asia!
As the Incubator track chair, please have my big welcome to join this wonderful open-source event!
