On July 14, the OpenJDK Management Committee unanimously approved the creation of the Client Libraries Group, with Phil Race as the initial person in charge, and approved the dissolution of the AWT, 2D, Swing and Sound groups. The newly established Client Libraries Group will continue to sponsor the OpenJFX and Lanai projects, but the Harfbuzz, Framebuffer Toolkit and XRender Pipeline projects will be disbanded due to the loss of sponsorship.
The vote was launched on June 21 for members of the OpenJDK Management Committee, hoping to create a new working group Client Libraries Group, merge the existing AWT, 2D, Swing and Sound combinations, and disband these groups at the same time. The long-inactive Harfbuzz, Framebuffer Toolkit and XRender Pipeline projects were disbanded due to the loss of sponsorship. The mailing lists and static web pages of the old groups will be consolidated and merged by Phil Race, the new head of Client Libraries Group.
It is reported that Phil Race is the person in charge of the 2D and Sound group, as well as the person in charge of the Lanai project. Phil Race has been a member of the Java 2D graphics team since 1999 and has contributed hundreds of changes to the client code. At the same time, he was the specification lead of JSR 15 (Image I/O Framework) and JSR 6 (Unified Printing API), and was responsible for JEP 382 (the new macOS Rendering Pipeline) in the Java Development Kit (JDK) 17.
Will OpenJFX be affected?
Although the OpenJDK Management Committee stated that it will continue to sponsor the OpenJFX and Lanai projects, there are still developers who worry about whether OpenJFX will be affected.
In this regard, the response of the OpenJDK Management Committee is:
Will not. Client group is a long-planned merger of AWT, 2D, Swing and Sound groups. The main purpose is to get rid of multiple mailing lists, which is often accompanied by cross-posting.
OpenJFX is an open source next-generation client application platform, suitable for desktop and embedded systems based on JDK, and aims to provide a modern, efficient, and full-featured toolkit for the development of rich client applications.
