actually does not have strict textbook regulations on how to define the Apache Way. Everyone who participates in the contribution of the Apache community has their own understanding and interpretation. There are 1,000 Hamlets for one thousand people.

ApacheCon is the official global series of conferences of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). As a prestigious open source feast, ApacheCon has attracted much attention in the open source community and is also one of the well-known activities in the early days of the open source movement.
As early as 1998, before the establishment of ASF, ApacheCon had attracted participants at all levels to explore "tomorrow's technology" in more than 300 Apache projects and their different communities. Also in this session, developers who developed HTTPD services gathered together and decided to establish the Apache Software Foundation.
ApacheCon is held once a year, usually in Europe or North America. It is an excellent opportunity for Apache developers to communicate, discuss, and meet offline. It is also a rare occasion for sharing ideas and exciting ideas. Through hands-on practice, keynote speeches, actual case studies, training, hackathons, etc., showcase the latest development and emerging innovations of the Apache project.
This year, in order to better serve the fast-growing Apache users and contributors in the Asia-Pacific region, the ApacheCon Organizing Committee and the Apache Software Foundation are pleased to announce that the first ApacheCon online conference for the Asia-Pacific region will be held in August 2021. Held online from 6th to 8th.
In order to let everyone know more about open source and ApacheCon Asia, SegmentFault will interview some Track Chairs or conference lecturers to let you know the stories behind the preparations for the conference and the stories of these experts.
Today, we bring you an interview with Zhai Jia, the co-founder of StreamNative.
The following is the content of SegmentFault’s interview with Zhai Jia:
About Zhai Jia
Hi everyone, I’m Zhai Jia, and I would like to thank SegmentFault for organizing this interview. I am currently a PMC member and Committer of Apache Pulsar and BookKeeper, the top projects of the Apache Software Foundation. I have been active in the open source community for a long time. I am currently focusing on evangelizing Apache Pulsar in China, so that everyone can better understand the advantages of Pulsar, a message flow system in the cloud-native era. And characteristics.
At the same time, I am also the co-founder of StreamNative, an open source basic software company established in early 2019. The company is composed of members of the founding team of Apache Pulsar. It supports the construction and development of the Apache Pulsar community and provides commercial services of Apache Pulsar to help Customers can better use Apache Pulsar to provide the most professional solutions in scenarios such as Message Queue and Streaming.
In ApacheCon Asia 2021, I am responsible for the promotion of the Messaging Track. I would also like to thank the lecturers from North America, India and China for their support and cooperation with the Messaging Track.
The story of Zhai Jia’s first exposure to open source
I knew a little about open source when I was in college, but I haven't been involved in an open source project. When I graduated from the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and joined EMC, I was engaged in file system and distributed design and development. During the period, I was fortunate to have access to and use Apache BookKeeper in the company's projects-a low-latency, high-performance, and strong-consistent distributed storage based on WriteAheadLog. Engine, began to participate in and contribute to the Apache open source project. Later, he gradually became a PMC Member of Apache Pulsar and BookKeeper.
When participating in open source and contributing to the Apache community, what are the personal and company gains?
Open source and the Apache community are a treasure trove of magic, allowing me to get to know more friends who agree with open source and technology. Everyone's daily communication can bring great inspiration. Many people have become colleagues and partners from netizens. Since the establishment of StreamNative, we have chosen the path of open source commercialization. We firmly believe that open source can also bring commercial success. At present, StreamNative's team management also draws on the open source community, insisting on self-driven, asynchronous communication, remote office, no office, and a very flat engineer culture.
"The Apache Way" that Zhai Jia understands?
The Apache Way is what we often call the "Apache Way". In fact, there are no strict textbooks on how the Apache Way is defined. Everyone who contributes to the Apache community has their own understanding and interpretation. There are one thousand people and one thousand people. Hamlet.
However, in the long-term collaboration and governance process of the Apache community, we have abstracted out several major principles that are currently generally accepted and reached consensus, such as winning authority, peer communities, open communication, consensus decision-making, project autonomy, independence, and the community is better than Code.
Among them, "community is better than code" should be the most widely cited by everyone and the one that I remember the deepest, that is, a healthy community has a higher priority than high-quality code, and a strong community can fix and correct the code level. This is the reason for building a continuously active community. We must truly believe in the energy of the community, believe in it, and be with it all the time.
The Apache Way is not only suitable for open source projects under the Apache Software Foundation, but also for other vendors' independent open source and other open source software foundation projects. Communication in the open source community can be used as references.
