The Apache Way has two points: one is Comunity over code; the other is Open the dicussion and open the decison
———Han Qing
ApacheCon is the official global series of conferences of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). As a prestigious open source feast, ApacheCon has attracted much attention in the open source community and is also one of the well-known activities in the early days of the open source movement.
As early as 1998, before the establishment of ASF, ApacheCon had attracted participants at all levels to explore "tomorrow's technology" in more than 300 Apache projects and their different communities. Also in this session, developers who developed HTTPD services gathered together and decided to establish the Apache Software Foundation.
ApacheCon is held once a year, usually in Europe or North America. It is an excellent opportunity for Apache developers to communicate, discuss, and meet offline. It is also a rare occasion for sharing ideas and exciting ideas. Through hands-on practice, keynote speeches, actual case studies, training, hackathons, etc., showcase the latest development and emerging innovations of the Apache project.
This year, in order to better serve the fast-growing Apache users and contributors in the Asia-Pacific region, the ApacheCon Organizing Committee and the Apache Software Foundation are pleased to announce that the first ApacheCon online conference for the Asia-Pacific region will be held in August 2021. Held online from 6th to 8th.
In order to let everyone know more about open source and ApacheCon Asia, SegmentFault will interview some Track Chairs or conference lecturers to let you know the stories behind the preparations for the conference and the stories of these experts.
Today, we bring you an interview with Luke Han, co-founder and CEO of Kyligence.
The following is the content of the interview with Han Qing by SegmentFault Sifu:
Han Qing
Hello everyone, I am Luke Han, the co-founder and CEO of Kyligence. I am also the co-founder and PMC Member of Apache Kylin. I am very honored and happy to participate in this ApacheCon Asia.
The story of Han Qing’s first exposure to open source
This is indeed going back very early. I remember that I started contacting open source projects in the first and second year of graduation, and the truly influential open source project is Apache Kylin. The success of this project is inseparable from the support of eBay. The initial project, the team, and customer cases were all excavated from within eBay. I remember that the project was evaluated by the senior vice president of eBay: Ready Open Source from Day One.
Now when I think back to that time, there was an episode. Due to the cultural differences between the East and the West, when we first joined the Apache community, many Westerners were not optimistic about us and were skeptical of our language, communication, and culture, but gradually we adapted and learned the rules of the Western open source community, and understood them well. Finally, it was recognized by the entire Apache community and foundation. In this process, we have indeed overcome many difficulties and gained valuable experience.
When participating in open source and contributing to the Apache community, what are the personal and company gains?
I have gained a lot, and this experience has had an important impact on me and my future entrepreneurship. First of all, Apache Kylin officially graduated to become the top Apache project, becoming the first top Apache project from China, which is at the same level as Hadoop and Spark. At the same time, I am also the co-founder of Apache Kylin and PMC Member. These make me feel very fulfilled. Secondly, the most valuable thing is that this has allowed me to expand my personal vision of globalization. I have met a lot of good open source friends and have been exposed to different opportunities. Kyligence was co-founded by the founding team of Apache Kylin. The company has served more than a thousand companies around the world, which shows that the market and customers are becoming more and more recognized by us.
Han Qing understands "The Apache Way"?
I think there are two points. One is Comunity over code. Community is much more important than code. In my opinion, it is more important to build a community culture. For example, helping users answer questions will make people have a sense of contribution and accomplishment. Only code cannot be called an open source community. The second is Open the dicussion and open the decison. We hope that there will be an environment where everyone can speak freely and create a more open atmosphere for everyone in the community to gain.
Han Qing and ApacheCon Asia
The topic of my speech is From Open Source to Product, thinking and practice of productization of open source projects. The content of the speech included how to implement open source productization, sharing practical experience of Kyligence, and so on.
I believe there must be a lot of people talking about technology and open source itself. We have all shared these topics at the beginning of our establishment. But today I want to give you some thoughts from another angle. Kyligence has been established for more than five years, and we have a lot of new insights, experiences, and even lessons. So I want to talk to you about how to operate an open source project from a product perspective and how to let the open source project find its value proposition and land it in the market. I hope that based on our practical experience, we can give more enthusiasts who participate in open source some reference.
Join us in ApacheCon Asia!
Apache Kylin is the first top open source project contributed by China to ASF. We hope that more people will join in the future and make something different and more together.
Apache Kylin
I remember that when I first joined the Apache community, there were very few Chinese. Many Westerners were not optimistic about us. They were skeptical of our language, communication and culture. They were not optimistic about our final graduation, because there were also a few from China before. The projects all failed in the end. But 11 months later, we successfully graduated and became the top Apache project, which was highly recognized by the community.
Along the way, I am really happy to see more Chinese active in the community today. Kyligence is also co-created by the founding team of Apache Kylin, dedicated to providing intelligent data services and management for customers in various industries around the world.
We announced the D round of financing not long ago. The company is in a stage of rapid development. Currently, a number of recruitment positions have been opened, and more like-minded students are welcome to join. You can send your resume to the HR mailbox: talent@kyligence.io. Our Slogon does not accumulate steps and cannot be "smart" for thousands of miles. In the future, we hope to work hard with you to create more different possibilities.
