One person walks fast, but a group of people can go further
———Jiang Ning
ApacheCon is the official global series of conferences of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). As a prestigious open source feast, ApacheCon has attracted much attention in the open source community and is also one of the well-known activities in the early days of the open source movement.
As early as 1998, before the establishment of ASF, ApacheCon had attracted participants at all levels to explore "tomorrow's technology" in more than 300 Apache projects and their different communities. Also in this session, developers who developed HTTPD services gathered together and decided to establish the Apache Software Foundation.
ApacheCon is held once a year, usually in Europe or North America. It is an excellent opportunity for Apache developers to communicate, discuss, and meet offline. It is also a rare occasion for sharing ideas and exciting ideas. Through hands-on practice, keynote speeches, actual case studies, training, hackathons, etc., showcase the latest development and emerging innovations of the Apache project.
This year, in order to better serve the fast-growing Apache users and contributors in the Asia-Pacific region, the ApacheCon Organizing Committee and the Apache Software Foundation are pleased to announce that the first ApacheCon online conference for the Asia-Pacific region will be held in August 2021. Held online from 6th to 8th.
In order to let everyone know more about open source and ApacheCon Asia, SegmentFault will interview some Track Chairs or conference lecturers to let you know the stories behind the preparations for the conference and the stories of these experts.
Today, what we bring to you is an interview with Jiang Ning, the initiator of Apache Member and ALC Beijing.
The following is the content of SegmentFault’s interview with Jiang Ning:
About Jiang Ning
Member of Apache Software Foundation, initiator of Apache Local Community (ALC) Beijing-Jiang Ning.
Jiang Ning is a technical expert at Huawei Open Source Software Center and a former chief software engineer at Red Hat Software. He has more than 15 years of enterprise-level open source middleware development experience, rich experience in Java development and use, and a functional programming enthusiast.
Since 2006, he has been engaged in the development of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) open source middleware project, and participated in the development of Apache CXF, Apache Camel, Apache ServiceMix, and Apache ServiceComb. He has been an ASF incubator mentor since 2015, and has participated in the incubation of Apache Rocket, Apache Weex (retired), Apache Skywalking, Apache ShardingSphere, Apache IoTDB, Apache Doris (Incubating), Apache APISIX, Apache Shenyu (Incubating), Apache Kyuubi (Incubating) .
The story of Jiang Ning’s first exposure to open source
The first time I came into contact with open source was when I was in graduate school. At that time, I needed to use some open source projects to complete the subject-related development work. At that time, my biggest feeling was that the documents and codes of open source projects were living learning materials.
I really started to join the open source project full-time in 2006, when IONA Asia Pacific R&D Center established a 6-person development team, specializing in the development of a WebService Java development framework called Celtix. Later this project merged with Xfire to become CXF. The Apache Software Foundation was incubated, and I became the Committer of the Apache Software Foundation as an initial member of the project. At that time in the country the opportunity to be able to do full-time open source is not much, I am very privileged to be among a specific mentality we can refer to my previous write a blog .
When participating in open source and contributing to the Apache community, what are the personal and company gains?
I think the biggest gain from participating in open source is to see how world-class excellent software is developed. With the help of the open source community, we can build and perfect open source projects very efficiently. With the help of the open source community, we can do things that no one can imagine. The biggest gain from participating in the Apache Software Foundation is to become an incubator mentor. In the process of helping domestic projects incubate, I not only deepened my understanding of the Apache Way, accumulated a lot of experience in project incubation, and gained a group of good friends at the same time. This is the follow-up establishment ALC Beijing has laid a very important foundation.
Jiang Ning understands "The Apache Way"?
I understand that the core value of The Apache Way is open and transparent, Meritocracy of the elite, and community-based collaboration.
There is a saying in Apache that things only happen when they happen on the mailing list. Through this open, transparent and archivable method, the cost of obtaining information is greatly reduced, allowing us to communicate across time and space.
Meritocracy delegates power to the people who actually do the work, so that talented people can show it, let good ideas stand out, and truly do what they deserve. This way of measuring talents based on their contributions to the community and empowering them ensures the healthy development of the volunteer community. This mode of operation greatly encourages everyone to look at problems from the perspective of the community, cross organizational boundaries, and help team members grow, rather than being limited to their own petty gains.
Community-based collaboration allows everyone to cross various boundaries to get together for a common goal and work together to solve the same problem. Only by relying on community-based collaboration can we accomplish things that are impossible for one person. The open source and open collaboration culture allows people from different companies and different backgrounds to sit together and solve problems that everyone cares about. In addition to developing software together, we can also develop standards together, or write a book and create a story together. A person walks quickly, but a group of people can go further. Through open collaboration, we can do things that many times one cannot even think of.
Jiang Ning and ApacheCon Asia
I participated in the ApacheCon for the first time in 2007. At that time, the Aapche North America Summit was held in Atlanta. The conference was held in the central hotel, not far from the Atlanta Olympic Park. Because of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, I was not sure about the 1996 Beijing Olympics. Atlanta was very interested in the 2008 Olympic Games. I went to the Atlanta Olympic Park not far from the venue for a stroll. At that time, I made a small wish in my heart, that is, when ApacheCon could be held in Beijing.
As more and more domestic open source projects join the Apache Software Foundation, more and more Chinese people participate in the construction of the Apache project and become members of Committer and PMC of the Apache project. Our voice at the Apache Software Foundation is getting louder and louder.
I am very happy that this year’s ALC Beijing can host the Apache Con Asia 2021 conference. Although we and more than 200 domestic and foreign lecturers can only meet through online conferences due to the epidemic situation, we can use the conference platform in the three-day conference. Do a lot of close communication.
My track is Keynote, and the topic of my speech is to nurture the open source community. Open Source Community (Open Source Community) uses the Internet to organically unite users and developers, allowing everyone to cross organizational boundaries and collaborate effectively for a common goal stand up. In order for everyone to embrace an open source culture that is open, transparent, and win-win cooperation, and nurture a healthy open source ecosystem, while we actively integrate into the industry’s successful open source community to learn from experience, we must also nurture an organically developed open source community within the organization.
I hope everyone can understand the elements of the open source community and the relationship between the open source community and the knowledge community after listening to my sharing. In order to cultivate an organic and sustainable open source community, what principles we need to adhere to.
