Yesterday, the Wikimedia Foundation announced the official adoption of Vue.js as the future JavaScript framework-MediaWiki, the underlying engine for Wikipedia.
As part of the Platform Evolution project, the Wikimedia Foundation's evaluation of the front-end framework began in mid-2019. The project aims to revolutionize Wikipedia's technology stack platform and development process.
Due to the long-term and extensive nature of this project, the Wikimedia Foundation stated that they have established a dedicated front-end architecture working group for this purpose, selected some projects for pilot work, and received positive user feedback and completed the final developer. Satisfaction survey to further understand the experience of the developers.
Most of the developers in the feedback stated that they are "affirmative of the prospects of cooperation with Vue.js" and are "confident to promote the use of Vue.js in internal teams".
The pilot program gave the foundation confidence in the proposal to adopt Vue.js. It is further implementing the Vue.js tool and product migration plan. To this end, the foundation has also established a Wikimedia design system team. Its continued work and upcoming priorities include :
- Prepare a shared Vue.js user interface component library
- Decide on Vue 2 or Vue 3, including conversion path
- Figure out how to build a component library and how to distribute it internally and externally in MediaWiki
