SuperEdge enters the CNCF sandbox

On September 14, 2021, the cloud-native distributed edge container system SuperEdge passed the evaluation of the world's top open source foundation CNCF Technical Supervision Committee officially became the CNCF sandbox project . In the future, the ownership of the project code, documents, official website and other content will be officially transferred to the CNCF Foundation for custody. This not only means that SuperEdge has been recognized by the cloud native open source community, but also marks the complete decoupling of the project from all the commercial companies behind it, and an important step for the native Kubernetes to land on the edge.

SuperEdge is a distributed edge cloud container management system based on native Kubernetes. It is led by Tencent Cloud and jointly launched by Intel, VMware Wei Rui, Huya, Cambrian, Meituan, Capital Online and other vendors in December 2020. The computing open source project aims to seamlessly extend the powerful container management capabilities of Kubernetes to edge computing and distributed resource management scenarios, empower edge IoT, edge AI, and edge intelligence industries, and promote the Internet of Things and digitalization. Landing.

Edge computing is in a connecting position in the field of cloud computing. At the beginning of open source, the SuperEdge project united all types of enterprises from hardware vendors, edge application developers, and edge application users to promote the development of SuperEdge and the establishment of edge standards through open source governance. The donation of the project to the CNCF Cloud Native Computing Foundation this time guarantees the neutrality of the project to the greatest extent, and is conducive to global developers, technology communities, partners, etc. to participate in the construction of the edge, win-win cooperation, and accelerate the implementation of edge technology And the establishment of marginal standards.

Tencent Cloud Edge Container Products

SuperEdge comes from Tencent Cloud's edge container product TKE Edge, which is a collection of its edge capabilities. It is worth mentioning that since the start of SuperEdge open source, Tencent Cloud has deleted the internal warehouse of SuperEdge. Commercial product public cloud TKE Edge and privatized TKE Edge all edge capabilities are developed and fixed in Github's https://github .com/superedge/superedge unified without exception.

Tencent Cloud TKE Edge is the most important part of Tencent Cloud's edge computing infrastructure. It connects to Tencent Cloud ECM, AIoT gateway, CDC, TStack, edge devices and other edge-based IaaS, shields the complexity of the underlying details, and carries the Internet of Things, industrial cloud, CDN, AI, audio and video live broadcast, and cloud games. Various business scenarios such as smart travel, smart city, smart retail, car networking, cloud gaming, live video, AR/VR, healthcare, financial banking, industrial Internet and other industries.

Tencent Cloud IoT platform IECP uses SuperEdge to connect many edge devices at the edge to perform unified management, control, and operation and maintenance of the cloud. There are many landing scenarios in the Internet of Things, device control, and edge reasoning. Tencent Cloud's many excellent cloud edge solutions are applied to the Internet of Things and edge devices.

WeMake, Tencent's industrial Internet platform, uses SuperEdge to place platform data in the client room, realizing customer data localization and low latency requirements. At the same time, SuperEdge's cloud management and control solution has greatly improved the efficiency of operation and maintenance, and has achieved significant cost reduction and efficiency enhancement for related manufacturing companies.

The functions of privatized TKE Edge have been integrated into the enterprise version of TKE, and Lingqueyun will conduct professional privatization delivery and maintenance. A number of privatization projects have been implemented externally in the areas of smart security, smart cities, smart transportation, smart school police, and edge AI.

Based on in-depth exchanges and discussions with customers on edge containers, the edge computing team found that users not only have a demand for cloud management and control of edge nodes, but also have a strong demand for cloud management and control of edge clusters. In analyzing the actual needs of users, the distributed cluster management project Clusternet was incubated from the SuperEdge project. These two projects complement each other and greatly promote the construction of Tencent Cloud in the field of distributed data center and edge computing.

SuperEdge recently launched cluster management, node management, remote operation and maintenance and other functions, aiming to allow users to complete the management and operation and maintenance of edge resources with a small amount of operations. We have launched a solution with our partners, which will soon be provided to SuperEdge for many developers to try. .
