On November 4, the 2021 Tencent Digital Ecological Conference Techo Day Technology Summit was held in Wuhan. Tencent disclosed for the first time the new developments in open source in five major technology fields and reviewed the four major changes in Tencent's open source.
Wang Juhong, vice president of Tencent, said that cloud and open source coexist and support each other, and jointly create value for users and developers, which will be the general trend and direction of the future industry. Tencent and industry technology will grow and develop on the cloud in an open source way in the future.
In the field of operating systems, Tencent has been investing in more than 10 years, and the cloud native operating system OpenCloudOS, which has been verified in large-scale scenarios with more than 10 million nodes with its partners, will soon become a member of the open source project of the Open Atom Open Source Foundation; in the cloud native field, Tencent Cloud has released two new projects, clusternet, a cloud-native management and control platform for multi-cluster management, and Polaris Mesh, a cloud-native service discovery and governance center; in the field of big data, Tencent will further move towards full open source, and actively contribute to and feed back the open source community , Will open source all-scenario online and offline mixing solution Caelus and the popular direction of computing field RSS (Remote Shuffle Service) new project Firestorm; in the field of database, Tencent will launch an enterprise-level distributed MySQL kernel database open source for large-scale transaction scenarios Project TXSQL; In the security field, Tencent has recently become the first company in China to join the OpenSSF Security Open Source Foundation. It will introduce Tencent’s security capabilities for two decades to help simplify the industry’s open source security process and provide security for open source projects. Assure.
In addition, in the Linux NextArch (next-generation architecture) foundation just established on November 2, Tencent will join as the first batch of founding companies, and will target the next-generation microservice architecture and industry application cases of heterogeneous architecture and multi-cloud scenarios. Open source cooperation, build open source technology, export best technical practices, promote industry transformation, and help technological innovation and business growth.
It is understood that the current open source work of Tencent mainly revolves around the three directions of project open source, community governance, and ecological co-construction. In terms of project open source, Tencent is the TOP8 company in the Github global corporate open source contribution list. It has open sourced more than 130 projects and has accumulated more than 380,000 developers' attention and Star. The vast majority of these projects come from Tencent's core business, and are code that is actually used within Tencent and has been business-tested.
In terms of community contributions, Tencent continues to contribute to more than 30 mainstream open source communities, and has joined more than ten international open source foundations such as the Linux Foundation and the Apache Foundation. It is also one of the earliest initiators of the Open Atom Open Source Foundation. In terms of ecological co-construction, Tencent Cloud donated two core technology sections-the Internet of Things operating system TencentOS Tiny and the enterprise-level container orchestration engine TKEStack to the Open Atom Open Source Foundation, and is about to donate the third cloud native operating system project. In addition, the full-stack machine learning platform Angel, the trillion-level big data messaging middleware Apache Inlong (Yinglong), the high-performance microservice governance framework TARS, and the cloud-native edge container open source project SuperEdge have also successively donated to enter the international top foundation incubation and Graduate. In 2020, Tencent's open source project TARS was further incubated, and the TARS Foundation, a sub-foundation of the Linux Foundation focused on microservices, was established. This is also the first software foundation initiated by a Chinese company.
Tencent open source four changes
Wang Juhong reviewed 2021 and talked about the four major changes that are taking place in Tencent's open source ecosystem.
First, it is the normalization of open source collaboration. Since the "930" reform on September 30, 2018, Tencent has begun to change its thinking on advancing open source, and officially regards open source collaboration as one of its company-level technology strategies. In the past three years, Tencent has established and incubated 117 open source collaborative groups, covering all cornerstone technologies of the Internet such as computing, storage, and data, and involving all core business sectors such as Tencent Cloud, WeChat, and QQ. At present, the open source rate of Tencent's internal code has reached 85%, which not only brings huge performance improvements and cost savings to Tencent, but also helps ecological partners through the cloud.
The second change is the coreization of open source technology. A large number of Tencent's self-developed core code and underlying technology that have been verified by internal business are being precipitated through open source collaboration and moving towards open source. At present, Tencent has achieved multiple open source breakthroughs in core technologies such as operating systems, databases, big data, AI, and cloud native. For example, Tencent has continued to invest in research and development for many years and has HTAP-capable database product TDSQL (PG version), Tencent OS, TencentOS, which has been developed for more than 10 years and has nearly 10 million commercial nodes. Once open sourced, it has been widely welcomed by developers and manufacturers.
The third change is the diversification of open source contributions. In recent years, Tencent Cloud, on the one hand, through continuous innovation, solves various challenges encountered online and feeds back the output to the community; on the other hand, it explores new technologies in the field of cloud computing, and does a good job of previewing and accumulating cutting-edge technologies. Continuously contribute to the open source community.
In the field of KVM, the key underlying technology of cloud computing, Tencent Cloud is the only Chinese company that has entered the global KVM open source contribution list for five consecutive years, and it is also the Chinese company with the highest contribution value. Tencent Cloud launched the Tengyuan Club to help the project grow healthily, assist open source enthusiasts to communicate, and bring out the leadership value of open source leaders. At the same time, Tencent has also been ranked first in the contribution of JDK15, 16, 17 Chinese companies, and has been named as a global Notable contributor by Oracle, the leader of the OpenJDK community.
Finally, there is the rejuvenation of open source talents. A good open source ecosystem is inseparable from close cooperation with universities. Since 2006, Tencent has launched the Tencent University Cooperation Rhino Bird Program around the three main lines of talent training, joint research, and academic exchanges to cultivate excellent Internet talents for the industry. In 2021, Tencent launched the "Rhino Bird Open Source Talent Program" for the first time, and continued to cooperate with universities in depth to help students understand open source knowledge from the simpler to the deeper, and use real enterprise projects to feed back teaching, and further contribute to the development of the open source talent ecosystem. In the first phase of the plan, there are a total of 420 domestic and foreign universities with more than 3,000 students participating. Wang Juhong said that in the future, Tencent hopes to link more industry organizations to participate in development and contribute more wisdom and strength to open source education.
Cloud and open source symbiosis and co-prosperity
Regarding the relationship between cloud and open source, Wang Juhong said that almost all mainstream technologies on the cloud are products of open source. It can be said that the rapid development of the cloud industry is due to the dividends of open source technology. With the development of cloud computing and cloud native, a cloud open source ecosystem has gradually formed, and cloud provides the best carrier for the development of open source.
Specifically, the cloud makes it easier for developers to use and share open source technologies. "Tencent Cloud continues to be compatible with open source products and open source architectures, and uses unified standards to make it easy for all manufacturers and developers to use it quickly and at ease." For example, Tencent Cloud combines Tencent's data technology practice, open source technology organization and commercial technology cooperation Partner capabilities, providing out-of-the-box data infrastructure and data tools covering Hadoop, ES, and MPP data warehouses in the cloud, rich and easy to use, open source and open, can help companies quickly build a safe, stable, scalable, and efficient Operational data IT architecture. Tencent Cloud's cloud native container orchestration engine TKEStack, functional components are derived from the open source community, and its technical architecture conforms to the standard Kubernetes interface. The latest version supports all available functions and security patches. Any application or project that conforms to cloud native specifications and standards can be used. Build and run.
Wang Juhong said that Tencent Cloud is also committed to exploring the social and commercial value of open source with the industry through cloud-native open source projects. "We hope that in the future, whether it is a single person, a small team of three or five people, or most small and medium-sized enterprises, they can use the same framework and technology as the big manufacturers, and then help the entire industry's technological innovation and progress."
For example, Tencent Cloud's cloud-native integrated deployment tool CloudBase Framework supports one-click deployment of front-end and back-end applications, which can greatly reduce deployment thresholds and improve deployment efficiency. Developers no longer need to spend time caring about server configuration, management, and operation and maintenance, and can experience open source projects faster. Tencent Cloud’s cloud-native development environment tool Nocalhost, through the reintegration of development spaces, clusters, applications, developers, and project administrators, can achieve one-click deployment of the training environment and help cloud-native AI development. It can be applied to the Internet + , Robots, autonomous driving, drones and many other cloud-native application development fields.
Hangzhou Xiaoying Technology, the enterprise user of Nocalhost open source components, makes the video editing process easier and smarter by applying AI technology to video production, dissemination, storage and other scenarios. The original minute level is upgraded to the second level, which greatly improves the efficiency of cloud training for AI video editing capabilities.
Tencent Cloud is also actively adopting open source methods to jointly build open and collaborative technical standards, and is committed to using open source to promote technological development. For example, in October this year, SuperEdge, a cloud-native edge container open source project jointly initiated by Tencent Cloud and a number of vendors in the community, officially became a sandbox project of the CNCF Cloud Native Computing Foundation through donation assessment. This not only means that the project has been recognized by the cloud-native open source community, but also marks that the project has moved from Tencent to the community, and has taken an important step towards establishing container-based edge computing infrastructure standards and accelerating the development of the edge computing industry.
The multimedia field has a strong desire for performance-the compression rate will double almost every ten years, and the requirements for computing resources will increase ten times. Therefore, from the perspective of technology and community development, we find and understand good open source Projects and providing comprehensive performance optimization are very important to the entire industry. In the current mainstream open source projects in the multimedia field, Tencent Cloud has participated in contributions, such as media library (FFmpeg), streaming media server (SRS), encoding library (AOM), player (VLC), transmission protocol (WebRTC, SRT) Wait. At the same time, Tencent Cloud has also participated in a number of open standard organizations in the audio and video field. Among them, in Alliance for Open Media, Tencent is the only Founding Member in China, and will participate in the formulation of the next-generation open coding standard AV2 in the future.
Wang Juhong said that open source work is a long-distance race, and it may be unknown and lonely for a long time. Therefore, it is possible to persevere if there is enough belief and ideal drive. This is true for individuals and enterprises. Tencent also hopes to help more developers and enterprises accelerate their open source innovation by building an open community link, and embrace open source and open collaboration together. Among them, Tengyuan Club is an important symbol and starting point of this plan. At present, Tengyuan Club has gathered more than 30 open source leaders, and has formed connections with more than a dozen open source communities and top international and domestic open source foundations to give full play to the "source power" of the open source community and create positive value with the majority of developers , Use technology to create a better future.
