In the era of 5G networks, edge computing and cloud technologies are shaping the future of IoT. As the latest trend of cloud technology, edge computing is also bringing new business opportunities to suppliers. At the just-concluded 2021｜OpenInfra Days China "The Next Decade of Open Source Infrastructure" conference, we saw relevant sharing from the industry's leading open source cloud service provider Kyushu Cloud.

As China's leading open cloud-side infrastructure service provider, Kyushu Cloud has built its own "open source gene" since its establishment in 2012, and is among the first domestic companies specializing in OpenStack and related open source services. In just a few years, Kyushu Cloud has grown into a leading company in related fields.

Recently, we were fortunate to interview Huang Shuquan, Senior Technical Director of 99Cloud at Kyushu Cloud, and listened to him telling him how Kyushu Cloud quickly and accurately seized the "outflow" and its efforts to promote the development and implementation of edge computing.

Open source, cloud computing future development form: hybrid cloud

According to Huang Shuquan, the current open source cloud computing is mainly based on OpenStack as the standard form. Over the years, Kyushu Cloud has also developed a trend from cloud computing as the center to edge computing, which is also a new development form of cloud computing.

In Huang Shuquan's view, computing power will be ubiquitous in the future, and cloud computing will develop towards hybrid cloud. Under the new development pattern, there will be more and more open source projects related to cloud computing basic resource management. Such as OpenStack, K8S, kata and other projects. Therefore, in the future, there will be more diverse forms of computing and different open source software frameworks to meet the development of new forms of computing.

Follow the 5G era | Actively deploy edge computing related fields

As the first batch of companies specializing in OpenStack and related open source services, Kyushu Cloud saw the trend of cloud computing to the edge from the beginning. Huang Shuquan said that as early as 2017, Kyushu Cloud began to develop related layouts in the field of edge computing, and co-sponsored a new StarlingX project with companies such as Intel and Wind River, mainly dedicated to edge management and computing resources. Recently, Kyushu Cloud has also actively participated in open source edge computing projects based on Edge Gallery.

In addition to contributing open source and edge computing, Kyushu Cloud is also actively participating in the implementation of edge computing. Today, Kyushu Cloud has made many achievements in the field of smart parks, such as Huzhou Smart Park and Hangzhou Smart Stadium.

Huang Shuquan believes that edge computing is more dependent on 5G technology, and Kyushu Cloud’s characteristic is to combine the management of these infrastructures with 5G networks, so there will be more and more emerging applications in the future, including cloud games, AR/VR Waiting for more new users to be deployed at the edge, Kyushu Cloud will also invest in new applications, and cloud games are also areas and related businesses that Kyushu Cloud is currently actively deploying.

As 5G networks continue to evolve, edge computing has gradually become the key to the cloud era. At this OpenInfra conference, we saw that technical experts from Kyushu Cloud brought "Edge Native, Edge Computing" and other related topics, which were impressive. This also gave us the key to open source that Kyushu Cloud will develop in the future. The project is quite interesting.

About Skyline Project｜Hand in hand to shape a new ecosystem of edge computing

Regarding the above doubts, Huang Shuquan also brought us some latest sharing. He introduced that, just as Skyline mentioned at this OpenInfra conference, this is the latest project that Kyushu Cloud currently contributes to OpenStack. The project is a modern management interface-OpenStack dashboard. It is a new project developed by Kyushu Cloud based on years of accumulation. It can effectively improve the interface experience and operational efficiency issues, and can more efficiently manage the resources in OpenStack.

After the Skyline project is contributed to the community, Kyushu Cloud will continue to increase investment and continuously improve the project to attract more partners to participate in the project and prosper the entire community together.

The significance of open source contribution to the community: technology changes the world

As we all know, with the continuous evolution and development of OpenStack in recent years, Kyushu Cloud, as a gold member of the OpenStack Foundation, is also among the best in its contribution to the community. So what does all this mean for a leading domestic open source company like Kyushu Cloud? What is the driving force behind this?

In the eyes of the outside world, OpenStack does not seem to be so "hot", but in Huang Shuquan's view, this just proves that OpenStack is becoming more and more stable. It is like the more widely used technology, we may become accustomed to it, but some newer technology will attract a time of high hot spots.

Huang Shuquan believes that in recent years, as OpenStack has stabilized, OpenStack has become the de facto standard for cloud computing. As a gold member of the OpenInfra Foundation, Kyushu Cloud has been integrating the spirit of open source into its own blood for many years. As a company with technology and pursuit, Kyushu Cloud not only hopes to lead the technology trend of the entire community (such as donating the Skyline project), but also hopes to attract more companies and individuals to promote the ecological prosperity of the community.

Huang Shuquan said that Kyushu Cloud’s belief in technology is to believe that technology can change the world and society. As an enterprise, it not only needs to survive, but also needs to continue to contribute to the community on this basis. So far, Kyushu Cloud’s contribution to the community is among the best. The value of open source and business cooperation cases

Huang Shuquan looks at the value and significance of open source from two levels: First, in the field of pure technology belief, open source is the core driving force that benefits the entire industry and promotes the entire technological change, and this is exactly what Kyushu Cloud has always pursued in this area of technology; Second, open source is not only selfless dedication but also rewarding. Open source attracts like-minded and high-level technical personnel to join, which can further strengthen the technical capabilities of enterprises and become the choice of users and customers.

At present, there are already many successful business cases of partners based on Kyushu Cloud technology, such as JuneYao Group, which successfully cooperated with Kyushu Cloud to create "JuneYao Cloud".

The success of the business case also gave us a new understanding and deeper feelings about open source, "the longer we spend in the open source circle, the more we will have a very sacred sense of faith."

Key words for "healthy open source projects": diversity

Regarding the topic of how to judge whether a project is a "healthy open source project", Huang Shuquan quoted an English term to summarize it-diversity. In other words, open source projects with diverse developers or diverse users will develop relatively better. For example, there are continuous contributions and many hobbyists participate. Although not so many people, they also participate. That proves that this will be a benign ecosystem and a relatively healthy open source project.

From a quantitative point of view, a "healthy open source project" will have many indicators. For example, the community’s monthly submission volume, deployment volume, number of users, and global user distribution patterns and other detailed data will become quantitative indicators of "healthy open source projects."

In general, developers need to be combined to form a positive cycle, which is the shape of a healthy open source project.

Post-epidemic era: The core of open source projects is still technology

Due to the epidemic, the development direction of the global open source ecosystem is different from before. Huang Shuquan believes that many open source communities have held offline summits and meetups every year to strengthen internal community communication and expand external influence. However, due to the impact of the epidemic, most of them are held online, and the decrease in offline communication will affect open source. Ecological development brings new challenges. Online has become the new normal in the "post-epidemic era," and we must all adapt to this new form of collaboration and communication.

For domestic companies, it is still necessary to pay more attention to the project itself, rather than the seemingly prosperous ones, but it just so happens that domestic companies can easily fall into it.

Therefore, for the development of the domestic open source ecosystem, the key to "whether the project itself creates value" is more important in the future-to bring value to users, there are enough users to use, this is the root of the matter.

Kyushu Cloud's current deployment: accelerating the implementation of 5G edge computing and popularizing technology dividends

Huang Shuquan said that the overall 5G edge computing business is also constantly landing, which is a focus of Kyushu Cloud's recent efforts.

On the edge computing platform side, Kyushu Cloud has made a lot of accumulation, such as the release of an edge computing platform based on Edge Gallery, so that enterprises or edge terminals can also build new platforms, manage their edge resources, and integrate 5G networks. After having a platform, how to make users better use these resources, Jiuzhou Cloud has actually made a lot of effort.

At present, Kyushu Cloud has created edge application scenarios, such as stadiums, smart factories, smart tourism, and so on.

Huang Shuquan said that Kyushu Cloud will build an edge application ecosystem based on 5G edge computing, and integrate industry solutions through a unified edge application platform to provide a wealth of cloud-side services for thousands of industries and escort 5G.
