On December 22, the open source operating system community OpenCloudOS officially announced the establishment, Tencent and Baode, Beijing Chuxin, Beijing Red Flag, Feiteng, Inspur, Godson, OPPO, Advanced Open Source, CLP Science and Technology, Zhongke Fangde More than 20 operating system ecosystem vendors and users, such as, Zhaoxin, etc., became the first batch of founding units.

Building an open and neutral open source operating system community

The operating system is the core basic software, and its importance is the consensus of the industry. However, for related manufacturers and individual users, the potential risks of the current supply chain cannot be underestimated. At the end of 2021, the mainstream operating system software CentOS in the industry will cease to be maintained, which puts a large number of users in security risks.

As the concept of open source gradually gains popularity, Chinese companies are also transforming from open source users to open source contributors and even promoters. In this context, Tencent and its partners jointly initiated the launch of OpenCloudOS, an open source operating system community.

The community is committed to creating a completely neutral, fully open, safe, stable, and high-performance operating system and ecosystem. Complete neutrality means that there is no vendor label in the community, nor is it dominated by any single manufacturer; complete openness means that it can gather domestic and foreign operating system research and development forces, community members to make decisions through consensus, and build an ecosystem by industry-university-research.

Over ten years of field accumulation, unique technical characteristics

The operating system ecosystem vendors of OpenCloudOS have achieved large-scale scenario verification of more than 10 million nodes, which is enough to provide enterprises with stable and highly available services to meet the demanding business load. As one of the initiators of the OpenCloudOS project, Tencent will also contribute all its technology accumulation in the operating system field for more than 10 years to the OpenCloudOS community and fully support the construction and development of the community.

1. The architecture design starts from the core and optimizes all-round performance
   In the architecture design, focus on all-round optimization from the hardware to the core. For example, on the kernel, optimization is carried out from the 7 dimensions of container infrastructure, CPU scheduling, memory management, IO, network, maintainability, and virtualization; on the hardware, the features of different versions of CPU X86/ARM are currently supported, and follow-up Continue to support domestic CPU manufacturers such as Loongson, Shenwei, Zhaoxin, etc.;

2. In-depth business scenarios and explore the characteristics of cloud native operating systems

   In the continuous performance optimization process, it has gradually penetrated into the user's business scenarios, and conducted in-depth analysis and optimization for typical business scenarios, and verified in cloud native, virtualized, and database scenarios. Taking the cloud-native scenario as an example, a set of cloud-native features is designed, which greatly improves the service capability of the OS for cloud-native businesses.

3. Complete business verification of three typical application scenarios

   Technical applications have been made in cloud edge technology scenarios such as virtual machines, physical machines, and containers, ecological applications have been made in the business scenarios of industry chain partners, and stability applications have been made in typical scenarios for users in eight major industries.

Promote operating system ecological equality under the foundation

As a domestic open source operating system community, OpenCloudOS accumulates the advantages of Tencent and many vendors in software and open source ecology. It has solid support in terms of cloud nativeness, stability, performance, and hardware support, and can support all hardware platforms equally and comprehensively. At the beginning of its establishment, OpenCloudOS decided to become a neutral community without vendor labels. In the future, it will become a member of the Open Atom Open Source Foundation. It will be hosted and supervised by the foundation. Participate in the joint governance of the unit.

On the technical path, we hope to adopt the joint R&D model of leading operating system manufacturers to jointly build OpenCloudOS, develop a stable community version of the operating system, ensure the security of the domestic R&D supply chain, and support operating system manufacturers to build derivative commercial versions based on stable versions of the community. The first founding units of the OpenCloudOS community also expressed their expectations for the long-term development of domestic operating system technology and their recognition of the idea of jointly building an open source community.
