The growth and popularity of Kubernetes and cloud-native applications is phenomenal. According to IDC, 2025, more than 90 percent of new applications will be cloud-native. customers have benefited from a cloud-native design model that makes next-generation applications more agile, reliable, scalable, and secure.

When it comes to service development, one of the most exciting parts of building the cloud is that we are constantly listening, building, and improving our services, making it easier for more developers to achieve their goals and access the cloud-native ecosystem. Containers and Kubernetes increase application portability and facilitate various application architectures that meet business needs. Today, we are sharing Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).

Azure Kubernetes Service

From a platform perspective, we provide built-in best practices for Azure Kubernetes Service and use industry-leading security services to provide a multi-layered security experience that adds layers of isolation between computing resources, data, and networking. We also work closely with open source communities such as CNCF to develop key components for building and operating Kubernetes, and bring back to the community our knowledge of working with enterprises.

At Ignite, we announced as a preview of the AKS cluster extension Starting with Dapr and Azure Machine Learning, Cluster Extension provides you with a unified experience for installing, updating, and upgrading services on your AKS cluster. Azure Service Operator project, built on the Azure OpenAPI specification, has reached a new milestone for customers who want to use Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs) to create Azure resources from their Kubernetes deployments.

For Windows Server container (not yet officially released), we will provide group Managed Service Identity (gMSA) support in AKS. The second iteration of gMSA support greatly simplifies the configuration and deployment of Pods with Active Directory identities.

Open source, a must for innovation

Open source software is an integral part of development at Microsoft, and our goal is that all developers can successfully build any application in any language, on any platform. Our contributions span multiple domains, from operating systems to programming languages to data, artificial intelligence, and networking. We also focus on cloud-native development, making it easier to write microservices and use Kubernetes with projects like Dapr, Helm, and KEDA. We want you to focus on building applications, not infrastructure. We will continue to work hard to make Azure the best cloud for developers and IT professionals.
