Russ Cox (rsc) finds that every once in a while someone says Go's first commit was in 1972. rsc thinks this claim is obviously very stupid and shares more interesting history about version control in Go. For example: Go's real first commit is the fifth commit, and the previous ones are all fake commits.

According to rsc, Go has used four version control systems: Subversion, Perforce, Mercurial, and Git.

Subversion

Go started to use Subversion as a feasibility experiment to evaluate Subversion's use within Google. Although Subversion was not selected in the end, it was Go's first commit to the SVN server.

Perforce

In July 2008, Go made the last commit in Subversion. It has since turned to Perforce, where most of the development work before Go was open sourced.

Here is the first commit for Go to Perforce:

After moving to Perforce, the labels DELTA=, OCL= and CL= were introduced. And many other changes have the same OCL= and CL= because they are created and committed in a single Perforce command without review.

Mercurial

In October 2009, Go's version control system was migrated to Mercurial as part of preparations to open source Go in November.

Git

From November 2009 until late 2014, Go had to look for a new code hosting solution due to the imminent closure of Google Code Project Hosting. After researching several options, I finally settled on Gerrit Code Review, which rsc thinks is a great choice.

    encoding/xml: remove SyntaxError.Byte

It is unused. It was introduced in the CL that added InputOffset.
I suspect it was an editing mistake.

Many people think that Go is hosted on GitHub, but GitHub is only the primary source for the issue tracker: the official primary copy of the source code is at go.googlesource.com.

So far, this is the story of Go before it moved to a fifth version control system.
