Zhang Jintao: Kubernetes is actually used for container orchestration. Containers are similar to containers, and they are things that hold various things. Container technology can be traced back to the 1990s, but containers have only become popular in recent years. By 2008, there were already some relatively mature technologies, such as LXC. Since container technology has existed for a long time, why did not many people talk about containerization from 2008 to 2013 (Docker officially open source), and no one even paid attention to what happened in the container field? Mainly because the learning cost of LXC is a bit high, but why did Docker become popular in the technical circle after being open sourced in 2013, both at home and abroad, are rapidly trying Docker... Mainly because Docker is a technology that not only brings containers, but also It also brings another very critical technology - Docker image, which is actually a packaging format, or an application delivery format. Since then, the delivery model of software has undergone tremendous changes. Originally, our delivery method may be to deliver source code directly, or it may be to deliver binary directly, but since Docker introduced the concept of container mirroring, we have been delivering since 2013. The container is mirrored...

Docker brings two things that can really liberate us The concept of productivity, when delivering a container image, will package our application and the running environment of our application into the same container image at the same time, which can solve one of the biggest pain points of programmers: why is it on my computer It works, but it doesn't work on your computer? In 2014, Google launched Kubernetes. Because the current software architecture requires us to do distributed and micro-services, a simple stand-alone software and stand-alone basic software cannot meet the needs of our production environment.

In 2015, Docker spun off its underlying container runtime. Docker, a company that was relatively successful in open source, was relatively unsuccessful in business. He also donated the format and specification of his container images to OCI. Now that your specification has been open sourced, other people can make corresponding products as long as they abide by this specification.

Chen Yang: Docker has opened up its own standards, but it has contributed to its own competing products.

Zhang Jintao: This is the case.

In 2016, the entire community felt that the maintenance cost was too high, and hoped that we would also introduce a specification called CRI - Container Runtime Interface.

In 2017, the commercial company behind Docker changed the name of the Docker project to Moby (white whale). But in everyone's mind, Docker is a technology that not only represents Docker itself, not only container technology, but a whole ecosystem.

The activity and contributors of Cotainerd gradually surpassed that of Docker itself. The current contributors to the Docker project had more than 2,000 contributors on Github before the split, and I ranked in the 60s. According to the statistics of this project, the top 100 has not changed for a long time, and it is difficult for others to enter the top 100. In more active projects, you will find that as a person's contribution increases, his ranking will gradually increase. After all, GitHub's leaderboard can only see the top 100.

In 2020, K8s removed Dockershim from code repositories, because now that there are more options for container runtimes, it no longer needs to embrace just this one.

In 2022, the Dockershim component has been deleted from the K8s source code repository, and it will be officially released in April.

From Docker to Kubernetes, why is Kubernetes the only choice for everyone now? On the one hand, it is because the entire open source community is very active and inclusive. Although it was originally open sourced by Google, the community gradually "de-Googled" and became a neutral open source community project.

Chen Yang: An open source project may be promoted by a certain company at the beginning. After success, it will become more and more diversified. After all kinds of people come in, it will become more dynamic.

Zhang Jintao: I am the new MVP in January this year. My earliest relationship with Microsoft MVP can be traced back to 16 years. At that time, I participated in PyCon China as a volunteer and met Sister Xin, the organizer of the conference. She is also the manager of Microsoft Reactor. Because of this contact, I have the following understanding and recommendation. Finally this year I also joined the big family of Microsoft MVP. I think that what I love to share is in line with the point that many members of the Microsoft MVP help others by sharing their knowledge. Becoming an MVP requires not only nominations, but also assessments. From last year, I have done more than 30 sharings in 2021 alone. I also write articles, there are mainly two types, one is normal technical articles, and the other is that I am maintaining a column called "K8s Ecological Weekly". Since it is called Eco Weekly, there will be one article every week.

Chen Yang: Did you write it alone? It's not easy.

Zhang Jintao: I started writing in March 2019. I should have written more than seventy articles last year.

Chen Yang: To sum up, you gave more than 30 lectures last year, and then wrote more than 70 articles.

Zhang Jintao: In addition, I am more active in some open source projects. I am now the PMC of the Apache APISIX project. Apache APISIX is an open source project originating from China. Later, I donated it to the Apache Foundation and became a Top open source projects. The other is K8s. I am the reviewer of the Kubernetes Ingress-Nginx project. Open Source China said in an exclusive interview that I was the first reviewer of the K8s Ingress-Nginx project in China (laughs).

Bit Bear: I heard that Mr. Zhang Jintao is still our "33 Chinese Open Source Pioneers" in 2021. Speaking of this list, Emily, the chairman of Open Source Society, is also there. Can you tell us why such a list was established in the first place? And why is it out of the loop?

Chen Yang: The list of "33 Open Source Pioneers" was jointly launched by Sifu and Open Source in 2020.

There are several reasons for this popularity: First, we start from people, and consider whether we have a special contribution, influence and popularity in the open source community. We will ignore the company behind him, or the degree to which he uses a certain technology; the second is whether he has done open source evangelism; the third is whether he has done open source education, such as colleges and universities, or to popularize the way of open source, open source Governance methodology. When the first year was elected, it was unanimously recognized by everyone. There is an episode. We decided to choose 30 people, but there are many outstanding people. We couldn't give up the 3 people who had already been selected. In the end, it became an "open source 33".

The number "33" will continue. In 2021, it will be 66. It is conceivable that it will be 99 in 2022... It will continue to develop.

Bit Bear: Emily, as the chairman of the Open Source Society, many friends present were also curious about the governance direction and operating rules of the Open Source Society.

Chen Yang: There is one thing that everyone insists on doing open source, that is, if I look for this direction, I will probably invest in it for more than ten or twenty years, and once you enter, you will hardly leave. Eight years ago, our group of like-minded friends had this idea: China actually lacks such a neutral community. We just want to gather together to do open source education in China, to popularize open source methodology, to assist in the incubation of open source projects, and to be a bridge between China and the international community. Eight years ago, we wrote down what the Open Source Society is and what it does. Eight years later, we found that nothing has changed.

If you meet people who do open source, you will find that they all have one thing in common, that is, they all like to share... In fact, everyone needs the satisfaction of creating or completing something. Open Source Society provides such an atmosphere, For example, today I came to communicate with Jintao and our Bit Bear after get off work. I was full of energy and felt very happy.

Zhang Jintao: Last year, there was an offline sharing called "Development and Planning of Programmers under the Open Source Wave". An audience member asked me: What benefits do you get from doing open source? In fact, to tell the truth, doing open source is essentially without any monetary benefits, it is to generate electricity with love. But why do we continue to do open source, I also mentioned in that sharing, we choose an open source project to contribute, or participate in a certain open source community, mainly from our own interests... I participate in open source From the perspective of everyone, I would feel that I am also a programmer at get off work, and I am still working after work? But I am really happy when I do open source.

Bit Bear: Many developers use their power to share open source silently because of their love. Chen Yang: It is very interesting to do open source, you will have intersections with all kinds of people. When the epidemic broke out, everyone in Kaiyuan Society made Xiaoyuan Robot. We built an open source anti-epidemic knowledge base in three days and put it on GitHub. After launching this chatbot, we thought he should have an image. At that time, the IP of Hudun was being formed, and the director also understood and supported public welfare undertakings. He authorized Hudun to our Open Source Society, and there was an open source Xiaohudun. . Bit Bear: We Hudun are not only open source participants but also movie stars. Besides Xiaohudun, as elites in the IT industry, what kind of movies, TV series or anime do the two like to watch?

Zhang Jintao: As I said earlier, I watch a lot of animations, and I like to follow new episodes, such as "Ghost Slayer". I also have a special rule. I watch new episodes on weekdays, and on weekends and holidays, I choose to watch some old anime.

Every year, Japanese animation has four launch time periods, spring, summer, autumn and winter. I will mark the ones I plan to watch and plan them out. In the past few years, when I was not too busy, I could basically achieve my goals. In recent years, especially after getting married and having a baby, many of the people I want to chase have been lying on my list for a long time.
Chen Yang: Time is really not enough. After watching the drama for so many years, I think the more classic one is "Black Mirror". The ideas or scenes it describes in it soon came to us. For example, S02E03's "Wodo Moment" tells the story of the virtual anchor's final political participation.
