At the just-concluded ASF Annual Meeting, new ASF members and board members for 2022 were born. The Apache Software Foundation announced the election results of the new directors through the official blog. Apache Software Foundation incubator mentor, ALC Beijing initiator, Huawei open source capability expert Jiang Ning became the new director of Apache Software Foundation .
The following is an authorized translation of SegmentFault's manifesto for this Apache Software Foundation board election.
My Apache Software Foundation (ASF) contribution journey started in 2006 and has been a Foundation Member for over 10 years. I am an active mentor of Apache Incubator (incubator) , helping more than 10 incubating open source projects [1]. Two years ago, I established ALC (Apache Local Community, Translator's Note: Apache Software Foundation Local Community) in Beijing, hoping to promote the Apache Way and open source culture in China. In fact, we have made considerable progress, and in 2021, we (ALC Beijing) successfully hosted the ApacheCon Asia .
If I can become a member of the board, I hope to help ASF break down the geographical, cultural, language barriers .
Based on my more than 6 years of mentoring experience in project incubation, I can see the barriers for these Chinese developers to participate in ASF.
When I talk to local developers, I find that while most of them use ASF projects on a daily basis, only a few contribute to them. This is not because they lack confidence in their programming skills, but mainly because of cultural differences. You may not be used to reaching out to unseen and unfamiliar ASF project developers via email lists. Therefore, in order to get these developers on , local mentor help and offline for the project are crucial.
As a local mentor, I hope that I can be a bridge between ASF and the local community, not just provide ASF guidance for project incubation. In 2018[2] and 2019[3], when Craig, Roman and Justin visited China, I hosted the Apache committer Shanghai offline meetup . This is a great opportunity for local Apache committers and potential incubating projects to have a direct conversation with ASF staff. These offline gatherings were very successful, and we exchanged a lot of ideas about community building and directly benefiting these open source projects. A good proof is that ShardingSphere and APISIX found their project incubation mentors immediately after this meetup.
When I saw the plans for the Apache Local Community from the Community Dev mailing list, it dawned on me that there was so much more I could do. As more and more incubation projects are added to the same-city meetups in Beijing, the idea of building a local community pops into my mind. This allows homegrown open source enthusiasts to come together by hosting events, publishing articles, producing podcasts, and more. So I launched ALC Beijing [4] in 2020, and helped to establish ALC Shenzhen [5] as a mentor. By sharing ASF's success stories in the local community, we inspire more developers and outstanding college students to join the open source development team.
Together with the community, we can do more than I imagined. Last year, ALC Beijing was honored to host 2021 ApacheCon Asia [6]. With the countless support of our sponsors, conference chairs and volunteers, we made this conference a success. At this conference, nearly 200 speakers provided 140 sessions, 13 keynotes, and 14 sub-forums. In the end, we attracted about 307,000 viewers to the conference. By hosting ApacheCon Asia 2021, ALC Beijing has taken a big step in raising ASF's local profile. I cannot describe how proud I am to see the preparations for the conference from scratch, nor how grateful I am for the generous help and support I have received from everyone.
ASF has always been a mecca for developers driving innovation in the open source world. I thoroughly enjoyed my ASF journey and hope to take it to the next level. It is a great honor to be nominated (as a new Apache 2022 board member) and I look forward to continuing to serve ASF on the Apache Software Foundation board.

Attached: Teacher Jiang Ning's English text of this election manifesto
I started my contribution journey to ASF in 2006 and have been a member for more than 10 years. I’m an active mentor of Apache Incubator. I have helped 10+ podling projects[1]. 2 years ago, I started the ALC(Apache Local Community) Beijing with an ambition to promote the Apache way and the Open Source culture in China. In fact, we've made quite a progress, in 2021, we (ALC Beijing) held ApacheCon Asia successfully.
If I were to be a part of the board team, I’d like to help the ASF to break the barriers caused by geography, culture, language.
Based on my mentor experiences with podling projects for 6+ years, I can tell these obstacles that stop Chinese developers from getting involved with the ASF.
When I talk to local developers, most of them are using ASF projects on a daily basis. On the contrary, only a few of them contributed back to the projects. It's not because they are not confident with their programming skills, it is mostly due to the culture differences. ASF somehow seems far from them. Reaching out to invisible, unfamiliar developers through email, created this insecure feeling spontaneously. Therefore, to bring these developers onboard, local mentorship and project meetups are crucial.
As a local mentor, I consider myself as building the bridges between ASF and the local community instead of merely offering the ASF mentorship to the podling project. I held the Apache committer Shanghai meetup in 2018[2] and 2019[3] when Craig, Roman and Justin visited China. It was a great opportunity for local Apache committers and potential podling projects to have direct conversations with the ASF officers. These meetups are extremely successful we exchanged a great deal of sophisticated thoughts on community building. These meetups benefited projects directly. One good evidence is that ShardingSphere and APISIX found their proper incubating mentors immediately after those meetups.
When I heard about the Apache Local Community plan from Community Dev. I suddenly realized there is so much more I could do. As more podling projects joined together to hold the colocated meetups in Beijing, I was triggered by the idea of building a local community. In this way, local open source enthusiasts could get together by hosting events, publishing articles, and making podcasts, etc. So I started the ALC Beijing in 2020[4], and helped to set up the ALC Shenzhen as a mentor[5]. By sharing ASF successful stories within the local community we inspired more developers, talented college students to join open source development.
Along With the community we can do more than I can imagine. Last year, ALC Beijing was honored to hold the ApacheCon Asia 2021[5]. With the countless support from sponsors, track chairs and volunteers, we managed to host the conference successfully. There were 140 sessions provided by nearly 200 speakers, 13 keynotes, 14 tracks in this conference. By the end of it, we attracted about 30.7k audiences to attend the meeting. By holding ApacheCon Asia 2021, ALC Beijing has made a big step in boosting the local awareness of ASF. I cannot describe how proud I am seeing everything started from scratch, and how grateful I am for the generous help and support I received.
ASF has always been a magnificent place for programmers to boost innovation in the Open Source world. I truly enjoyed my journey with ASF and want to bring it to the next level. It's a great honor to have been nominated and I look forward to serving the ASF from the BoD.
