iOS / iPadOS 15.4 officially released: Wear a mask to unlock Face ID, only supports 12 and above models

In the early morning of March 15th, Beijing time, the official version update of iOS / iPadOS 15.4 was pushed to users. This is the fourth major update of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. It has been a month since the last update. Masks use Face ID.

It is understood that the feature works similar to normal Face ID, but scans the area around the eyes for authentication.

It is worth mentioning that this feature only supports iPhone 12 and later models, and neither the iPhone 11 series and below nor iPads that support Face ID have this feature.

Users of iPhone 12 and later models only need to turn on the switch of "Use Face ID with a mask" in the system, and then re-enter the facial data. This feature works for unlocking your phone and making payments, more than previously unlocking your iPhone with your Apple Watch.

At the same time, Apple also warned that since the facial authentication only scans facial features around the eyes, the accuracy of this method will be reduced.

In addition, iPadOS 15.4 also brings Universal Control, allowing users to use the same mouse/trackpad and keyboard to control both Mac and iPad.

The update also adds 37 new emojis, including faces, gestures, and household items.

In addition, iOS/iPadOS 15.4 also supports tap to pay, and other updates include a new anti-tracking feature for Apple's AirTag tracker, an option to add custom domains to iCloud Mail directly on the device, and more.

Finally, this update also includes some bug fixes:

• The keyboard may insert periods between entered numbers
• News widget in today view may not open article when clicked
• Photos and videos may not sync to iCloud Photo Library
• Talking screen accessibility may quit unexpectedly in Books app
• When Live Listen is turned off in Control Center, it may not turn off​
