Recently, Microsoft officially announced that the Insider version of Windows 11 Home Edition has disabled the SMB1 protocol by default, and other versions have been disabled by default. This will be the final stage of Windows disabling SMB1.
SMB, the full name of Server Message Block, is a communication protocol developed by Microsoft and Intel in 1987, which can be used to share files, printers, serial ports and communication resources with computers under the network. Since Windows 95, the Microsoft Windows operating system (operating system) has included client and server SMB protocol support, and has now developed to SMB version 3.0.
According to Microsoft’s official introduction, SMB1 will not be enabled by default in the Windows 11 Insider version. In the next major release of Windows 11, SMB1 will be completely disabled by default. As always, administrators can still reinstall.
Additionally, Microsoft will remove the SMB1 binaries in a future release, and Windows and Windows Server will no longer include any related drivers and DLL files.
However, Microsoft will provide additional installation packages for organizations or users who still need SMB1 to connect to old factory machinery, medical equipment, consumer NAS, etc., but will not provide any technical support and guarantees.
