In a world of ever-increasing entertainment content, research shows that one-third of American households now watch more than 25 hours of TV per week. As the TV experience continues to evolve, we've also set ourselves a goal of creating a tailored TV experience for our users, making it easy for them to access the entertainment they love.
We are very optimistic about the future of Android TV OS, which currently has 110 million monthly active devices, including millions of Google TVs. Android TV and Google TV are sold by more than 300 partners around the world, including 7 of the top 10 smart TV original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and more than 170 pay TV operators. Plus, thanks to the hard work of our developer community, there are now over 10,000 apps available on TV, and counting. Watch the Google TV and Android TV OS Updates video for more details.
Since last year's I/O conference, we've been working on enabling you to build better, more engaging experiences on Android TV OS. In addition to platform updates, new features such as extended integration with Live Tabs allow users to better engage with your content. If you haven't started using the WatchNext API , take some time to learn how to add it to your app to make it easier for users to discover and access your content.
Our range of new features and tools for Android 13 will focus on improving overall performance and quality, improving accessibility, and supporting multitasking.
- Performance and Quality : To help build the next generation of TVs, we've introduced new APIs to help you develop more efficiently and provide users with a great device experience. AudioManager allows your app to predict audio routing and know exactly what playback modes are available. Properly integrating your app with MessiaSession makes it easy for Android TV to respond to HDMI state changes, signaling to pause content to save power.
- Accessibility : To improve how users interact with the TV, we've added support for different keyboard layouts to the InputDevice API. Game developers can also reference keys based on their actual location to support different layouts for physical keyboards such as QWERTZ and AZERTY. Users can also enable audio descriptions across apps by opting-in for new system-level accessibility features.
- Multitasking : TVs are now not just for watching media content. In fact, we often see users answering phone calls or checking camera feeds on their TVs in smart homes. Android 13 can support the updated Picture -in-Picture API through the Android Core API to assist users in multitasking. The TV's picture-in-picture feature supports extended mode (which can display more video footage from the same group call), docked mode (which can avoid overlaying content on other apps), and keep-clear API (which can prevent overlays in full-screen apps) cover important content).
Android 13 Beta for TV is now available, where you can test your apps and share your feedback for the latest release . Thank you for your continued support of Android TV OS.
