2022 State of Open Source Code Survey Report: Top 5 Most Popular Automation and Orchestration Technologies, Puppet Number One, Kubespray Top Growth

In recent years, with the continued popularity of DevOps, more and more industry organizations have made it the first choice to continue to promote the prosperity of open source DevOps software. Recently, Openlogic released a set of "2022 Open Source Code Status Survey" data, and summarized the "5 most popular open source automation and orchestration technologies" in 2022.

According to the survey data, the top 5 most popular open source automation and orchestration technologies in 2022 are as follows:

1. Puppet

Among automation and orchestration technologies, Puppet is the most popular technology, with 26.6% of respondents using the software, according to the 2022 survey data. An increase of more than 10% compared to the previous survey, with Puppet gaining 16% and ranking as the third most popular automation/orchestration technology after Ansible and Terraform.

2. Ansible

In the 2022 survey data, Ansible is the second-largest company using automation and orchestration technology, with 24.8% of respondents reporting using the software. This figure is flat compared to the previous report, which showed Ansible usage at 24%.

3. Chef

Data shows that 23.4% use Chef as their automation and orchestration tool of choice. Like Puppet, Chef has seen double-digit growth in usage, up 10 percent since the last survey.

4. Salt

The fourth with the second highest growth rate compared to the last survey was Salt. Salt improved from 7% to 21.9%, showing a strong growth trajectory for this open source automation and orchestration technology.

5. Kubespray

Compared to the previous data, Kubespray ranked fifth with the highest increase. In the previous survey, only 5% of respondents chose Kubespray, and in 2022 this number has grown to 21.4%.

Top 5 open source automation and orchestration trends for 2022:

It is reported that the 2022 State of Open Source Code Survey will narrow the scope to automation and orchestration only, listing only the most popular open source automation and orchestration tools, and will open source continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery/deployment (CD) tools classified separately.

The survey categorizes Puppet, Ansible, Chef, Salt, Kubespray, Terraform, Rancher and Zabbix as automation and orchestration technologies, and GitHub Actions, GitLab, Jenkins X, Jenkins, Spinnaker, Travis CI, Tekton and Zuul as CI /CD tool.

The data shows that this year the percentage dropped to 16% compared to last year when 50% of respondents said "they don't use any of the tools listed", while the use of DevOps-related tools has grown significantly.

Salt surged from 7% to 22% compared to last year; Puppet was another bright spot, with respondents outpacing Ansible in usage choice over the past 12 months.
