On June 22, Fortune (Chinese version) released the list of "China's 40 Business Elites Under 40" (referred to as 40U40). ONES founder and CEO Wang Yingqi was successfully selected.
As one of the new 40U40, Wang Yingqi was invited to be a guest on the "Fortune" (Chinese version) podcast program "Wealth Relativity", and had a conversation with Yang Anqi, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of "Fortune" (Chinese version) New Media, about "Is there any good software in China?" Discuss this topic.
Below is an excerpt from the live broadcast.
Fortune (Chinese version): What do you think is the essence of a piece of software? How to make excellent software?
Wang Yingqi: I think the essence of software should be: the process of human beings mapping some logics in real society to computers or mobile phones. That is, we must first have an understanding of the world, and then write it into software and turn it into a binary thing, from atoms to electrons.
So what makes software great? When I was an engineer in the early years, I thought good code was good software. When I began to slowly understand the product and do business, I thought that a good product was an excellent software. Later, I made investments, including starting my own business. I think that the "excellent software" we are talking about today is basically business excellence. Software has commercial value, right? Can help another business, or it can be a sellable unit itself, so our expectations for software are also different.
Fortune (Chinese version): What do you think is the relationship between people and software, and between people and computing?
Wang Yingqi: I think people, software and computing are actually using new service methods to meet old needs. Faster and more efficient to meet some of our traditional needs, such as communication, arithmetic, connection, and shopping needs.
The other is that the physical world in our traditional sense has a distance. And software and computing basically reconstruct the physical world. For example, we can communicate remotely today, instead of being in the same conference room to listen to the live broadcast. So, the software is actually the binary definition of the physical world, or the electronic definition of the atom, but in fact we abstract the atom again and do not completely replicate the atomic world.
Fortune (Chinese version): What do you think of the retirement of the 27-year-old Internet Explorer?
Wang Yingqi: Because IE technology has not really led to the next generation. In the early years, IE was the only window we had on the Internet, but then there was Firefox, and then there was Chrome. Later, because of Microsoft's closed system, its acceptance became lower and lower. I think this is a normal phenomenon.
IE is actually a very typical example. The cost of updating software and the commercialization cost of software companies are very high. If you can't keep up, you will be eliminated.
Fortune (Chinese version): Do you think there is a gap between China's software development process and the global one? Or is China's software development already leading the world?
Wang Yingqi: There is still some distance, I think we are still catching up. In fact, everyone has seen the car assembly line, and the software is actually the same. According to the needs of customers, it is divided into versions, handed over to engineers for development, testing, and finally launched for customers to use. The software also needs an assembly line. ONES actually helps enterprises to optimize and improve the software production process as a whole, effectively organize large-scale and complex team collaboration to enhance the core competitiveness of enterprises. It is more like an indispensable assembly line in the software industry.
Fortune (Chinese version): What does being 40 mean to you? Do you have any life advice to share with our readers?
Wang Yingqi: Over the past period of time, I have given myself a very important criterion, that is, to be happy every day, this is very important. Whether it's a business or a life, what's actually important is to live a richer, happier life and not do things you don't like.
I learn a new sport every year and started sailing last year. Sailing actually gives you the opportunity to control a thing sailing in the ocean.
Sailing in the sea is very different from sailing on land. Because once you drive out of the port, you have nothing to rely on before and after, you can't park anywhere, and you can't rest. This is very similar to starting a business: once you drive out, you can't go back. You don't touch the water and you don't touch the ground, and you have to ensure safety, you have to ensure the safety of the ship, and you have to ensure the safety of the crew. Others say "smooth sailing", but in fact, when you are in a tailwind, open all the sails, which is actually the most dangerous time, and it is easy to capsize if you are not careful, which is very similar to starting a business. So it’s important to keep reminding yourself that risk is everywhere when your business is at its best.
