At the 2020 Amazon Cloud Technology re:Invent Global Conference last year, former Amazon Cloud Technology CEO Andy Jassy released this exciting feature in his keynote speech, that is, can run Microsoft SQL Server on Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL Application, and no or little modification of the code.

Babelfish for Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL is available in all regions that support Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL. The Amazon Cloud Technology China (Beijing) area operated by Sinnet, and the Amazon Cloud Technology China (Ningxia) area operated by West Cloud Data have also been officially launched!

Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL compatible version can understand queries in Microsoft SQL Server applications. uses Babelfish. Compared with the traditional migration of databases to the cloud, only a small part of the work is required. Applications currently running on SQL Server can be directly run on Aurora PostgreSQL. Babelfish understands SQL Server wire protocol (TDS) and Microsoft SQL Server query language T-SQL, so you don't have to switch database drivers or rewrite all application queries.

After turning on the Babelfish function, you can connect to Babelfish by changing the SQL Server-based application to point to the Babelfish TDS port on the Aurora PostgreSQL cluster. Babelfish includes support for stored procedures, savepoints, static cursors, nested transactions, SQL_VARIANT data types, and other more features.

The Babelfish for PostgreSQL open source project was also released to the community simultaneously. Anyone can access the source code of Babelfish from the open source project page. This allows users to use Babelfish to run applications based on Microsoft SQL Server on their own PostgreSQL server.
