In the process of considering a career change, you may be uncertain about the following two points:

  1. Can I learn the skills needed to change careers?
  2. Do I like the job after changing careers?

It is normal to have these concerns.
However, we cannot be giants in thought and dwarfs in action.

In the matter of changing careers, looking ahead and looking back, I myself suffered a lot of losses.
It was not until I was almost 30 years old that I implemented the action and began to change careers.
What we need is often not a perfect plan, but quick action.

Of course, taking action does not mean resigning.
For most people, off-job learning is not the best option.
When you lose your job and study at home, anxiety can follow, and anxiety can make it easier to give up.
Therefore, the better option is to keep your current job, make good use of all your spare time, and arrange your studies reasonably .

First, plan a study schedule of around 1-3 months and try to put in 2-3 hours a day.

Where did that time come from?
You can do it from get off work hours, or take advantage of early rise times.
You have to make time for it anyway.
Otherwise, you have to accept the reality:

do a job that you don't like;
Want to change, but do not want to pay;
Then blame yourself, and the cycle repeats;
Until the end, I lost every opportunity that could be changed, and I reluctantly accepted the reality.

Try to maintain a fixed learning pattern, avoid fishing for three days and drying the net for two days

So, how to judge whether this small step is the right one?
My experience is:

When the first stage of the study plan is over, I can gain something, I feel a little bit of learning, and I will never get tired of it.

This shows the direction is right.

But what if this small step goes wrong?
There is no loss, the work is still there, you can stop here, forget it, and do your current work well.

If you don't want to give up on this, then reflect on:

Where did I go wrong in this small step?
How can I adjust?

my small steps

In 2018, I unintentionally became interested in baking. I bought a lot of tools and tutorials. I went home from get off work to do it myself, and planned to use it as my side business after I finished my studies.
Later, I also signed up for more than 10,000 offline trainings.
When the class was over and I was ready to do it with confidence, I noticed something was wrong:

I don't open a shop, why do others buy your cakes?
I promote it in the circle of friends, but I have never been such a person.
I want to do it efficiently and in large batches, and I need to purchase a lot of equipment.
Am I operating without a license?
...

I reflect on what went wrong with this small step:

  1. Underestimating the upfront cost of getting something done when you didn't
  2. Does not consider the suitability of one's own personality/characteristics
  3. I don't need a side hustle

So, I desperately found a job.
During the last attempt to take the public exam, it ended in failure.
After learning CAD, I considered transferring to a technical position in the company. When I achieved something, I found that I didn't want to deal with cold machinery and equipment, and the salary ceiling was not high, so I gave up.

I think, since considering the technical position, why can't it be the Internet industry?
So, I started to learn Python. The original idea was very simple, and I switched to Python back-end development.
In the next six months, I will get off work for 2 hours, get up 1 hour early, and keep learning for 3 hours a day, from basic Python syntax, functions, classes to Flask, Django, until I can develop a small website.
That half year was really fun.

Unfortunately, when it came time to look for a job, I couldn't even write a resume.
When I bite the bullet and write it out, I can't even get an interview invitation when I vote it out.

I reflect on what went wrong with this small step:

  1. I have no age advantage
  2. I have no actual work experience
  3. The job requirements for Python back-end development are not as much as advertised

But I do want to move into the internet industry, and going the tech route works for me too.
With the skills I currently have, which position is more advantageous in the Internet industry?
After understanding and consultation, it was finally decided to turn to the test engineer.

The above are all mistakes and detours that I have tried to change careers.
Some trial and error, and even paid a lot of money cost.

Fortunately, I did not stop here and accept my fate.
I still want to give myself a few more chances, and I am fortunate to be able to gradually correct the direction and embark on the right path.
Because, if you make one or two more mistakes, you will be really exhausted physically and mentally, and you may give up.

Life is not afraid of trial and error, but you can't try it like a gamble, which is not suitable for most people.
Take a small step, try a small step, reflect and adjust if you are wrong, stick to it if you are right, and work hard to make it happen.
The above is my personal sharing, I hope it will help you.
wish you success!
come on~
