The birth of emerging technologies is always ups and downs in touts and declines, or tends to be silent, or reborn - 5G technology is no exception. 2022 is the third year of commercial use of 5G technology. After experiencing the frenzy in 2019, the 5G market has returned to rationality three years later. People can't help but wonder, where is the wind of 5G blowing?
Unmanned driving may be one of the typical application scenarios. Among them, there are not only intelligent 5G remote driving for mines and ports, but also automatic driving that major car companies and Internet giants are competing to deploy. How far are we from true depopulation? What kind of changes can 5G technology bring to the field of unmanned driving? How to popularize and innovate the future of unmanned driving?
On July 16th, the TVP 5G Technology Sharing Conference and the Tencent 5G Innovation Center Press Conference was held on "5G is "Driving" - Unmanned Driving in the 5G Era. 13 technology and industry experts, starting from the application of 5G + industry , focusing on the unmanned driving scene, leading the participants to "see" 5G, and explore the future trend of 5G large-scale application!
5G converged applications set sail
Li Shan, Director of the Wireless Application and Industry Research Department of the Radio Research Center of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, gave a keynote speech titled "5G Converged Applications Sail Away". She comprehensively analyzed the current situation and development direction of 5G converged applications from three perspectives: the voyage of 5G applications in my country, the scale of 5G industry applications, and the challenges and suggestions.
my country's 5G applications set sail
In 2022, the third year of 5G commercial use, Li Shan led the participants to review the bits and pieces of the past three years from the following aspects:
- policy level. The country attaches great importance to the application of 5G, and the "2022 Government Work Report", "The 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of the People's Republic of China and the Outline of the Vision for 2035" have written the development of 5G into documents. Various ministries and commissions are actively deploying the development of 5G applications. The typical representative is the "5G Application "Sail" Action Plan (2021-2023) issued by ten ministries and commissions including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In addition, local governments are also actively releasing policy dividends, combining the characteristics of local economies and industries, from promoting the development of the 5G industry to deepening the deployment of 5G applications.
- Industry application level. Under the guidance of policies, the application of my country's 5G industry has changed from "1" to "10", from "testing the waters and seas" to "sail away". From the perspective of the overall application of the industry, the integration of 5G with various industries is constantly improving. The number of application projects continues to increase, from pilot demonstrations to large-scale replication. In 2021, there will be more than 12,000 projects nationwide. 5G applications cover 39 categories of the national economy, and the number of industry virtual private networks has doubled from the end of October last year.
Li Shan mentioned that 5G technology has encountered general fragmentation problems in the process of application, and with the development of the past few years, the industry's common technical capabilities and general terminal needs have also begun to show a gradual focus, positioning, big data, The demand for edge computing, cloud computing, artificial intelligence technology and other technologies is rising, and the demand for cameras/cameras, 5G CPE, 5G gateways, sensors and other terminals is strong. From the perspective of key industries, 5G applications have begun to accelerate replication and promotion across the country. For example, 5G application projects such as medical and industrial have increased by about 6-8 times, and the scale of projects has expanded by more than 3 times in provinces. The expansion trend is obvious.
Li Shan concluded that the large-scale development of 5G will go through four stages of warm-up, start-up, growth and scale development, and will be gradually promoted in various industries.
5G industry applications have achieved remarkable results
Subsequently, Li Shan introduced several typical applications in the 5G industry, namely:
- Industrial field: The development of the industrial Internet in the past few years has driven some industrial enterprises to enter a higher stage of digitalization, and industrial enterprises have generated greater demand for 5G in terms of business, security, operation and maintenance, and cost. Different industrial fields will be divided into three batches of 5G applications according to their own reform needs and digitalization level.
- Power field: The power industry has a strong digital foundation and has gone through four generations of development. Differential protection of distribution network, terminal data collection, and power grid emergency communication are typical 5G use cases in the power industry. In the future, 5G will play an important role in power generation, transmission, substation, distribution, and power transmission.
- Medical field: In recent years, my country's medical + Internet work has achieved remarkable results. The scale of digital medical users has continued to increase, and medical institutions have increasingly demanded 5G technology. 5G will improve the informatization, management, and service capabilities of the medical industry. have a significant effect.
- Cultural and tourism field: 5G + cultural and tourism integration is a development process of first to B and then to C. Through 5G technology, the creation of smart scenic spots and digital culture will enhance people's sense of gain.
Scaling challenges and recommendations
Li Shan pointed out that the large-scale development of 5G industry applications faces three core problems:
- Insufficient overall ecological capabilities: The 5G ecosystem is more complex than the 4G ecosystem, and it is more difficult to innovate and synergize; enterprises have insufficient ecological capabilities, open capabilities, transfer interests, and build an ecological awareness; the ecosystem for industry applications is still incomplete. The participation of industry integrators, industry research institutes/associations, and industry terminal manufacturers is still low. Need to drive operator transformation and open capabilities; foster clusters of solution providers.
- Insufficient coordination inside and outside the industry: The development stage and degree of each industry are different, but the path, experience and generalized product-level capabilities are replicable, requiring coordination and promotion between industries, and there is still a lack of mechanisms; the formulation and implementation of application standards need to be Cross-industry collaboration; industry supply capacity needs to be strengthened, and industry-oriented products and services need to be further improved; industry application supply and demand contradictions are mainly concentrated in the needs of industry customization and the ability to generalize the 5G industry. The cost of chips, modules, terminals, and networks needs to be further reduced to meet the needs of customization while taking into account the cost-effectiveness.
- Insufficient depth and breadth of application: Different industries have different degrees of informatization, different development levels, different needs and problems, insufficient integration with industry technology, equipment, processes, etc., and insufficient integration with industry core links . In this context, Li Shan also put forward suggestions for the development of 5G converged applications-strengthen top-level design and build an innovation system for 5G large-scale applications: top-level design applies source power; promote collaboration in the industry to form development resonance; vertical The industry gives full play to the enthusiasm of the industry and further promotes the development of 5G.
The development trend of 5G To B
Tan Hua, Director of the Industrial Internet Technology R&D Department of China Telecom Research Institute and Tencent Cloud TVP, gave a keynote speech entitled "Development Trend of 5G To B". He led the participants to review the development, evolution and capabilities of 5G technology, and introduced the overall application and development of 5G technology based on industry applications.
The evolution of 5G technology
Tan Hua first shared a set of data: as of the end of February 2022, a total of 209 operators in 83 countries/regions around the world have launched 5G commercial networks; a total of 20 operators around the world have launched independent 5G SA networks for public users services, and another 119 operators are promoting the commercial use of 5G SA networks. This set of data reveals a status quo of the 5G industry: China is in a leading position in the high-quality development of the global 5G SA network.
In terms of 5G frequency bands, 3G PP Rel-17, Rel-18 and other standards, various countries and organizations are developing and competing in them. The realization of new application scenarios in the 5G era puts forward new requirements for network native capabilities and capability opening: how to access the cloud platform? How to two-way remote control? How to realize data collaboration and real-time control of cloud, edge and terminal? Behind this, new requirements are put forward for responsibility boundary, data privacy, application layout and cloud-edge collaboration, which need to be solved urgently.
Tan Hua said, "5G + native application architecture" is based on the practice of cloud-network integration after 3 years of 5G operation, relying on the large bandwidth, low latency, massive terminals and other characteristics of 5G networks, combined with AI, cloud platforms and IOT ubiquitous IoT. Collaboration, focusing on scenarios with high network dependencies such as intelligent manufacturing, robots, AGVs, Internet of Vehicles, and unmanned driving, is expected to be used to innovate intelligent applications and promote the large-scale development of 5G To B.
Subsequently, Tan Hua introduced key contents such as typical 5G terminals, typical industries, network innovation capabilities, 5G customized networks and industrial 5.5G networks.
To B industry application of 5G technology
Tan Hua introduced, how to access the cloud platform? How to two-way remote control? How to realize data collaboration and real-time control of cloud, edge and terminal? These are the core problems we need to solve. In recent years, we have also explored some problem-solving ideas:
- The first is northbound, data on the cloud platform: through data collection, production data cloudification, docking with enterprise MES, ERP, etc., to achieve supply chain collaboration and digital Kanban, reduce enterprise IT software and hardware deployment and operating costs; the core technology is the connection protocol Libraries, IoT platforms, digital twin visualization, etc.
- The second is southward, industrial control cloudification: to achieve intelligent industrial manufacturing and production, cloud-based PLC, robotic arms, robots, machine vision and other needs, machine substitution has become a trend; the core technologies are open industrial control systems, automation equipment IoT Access ecology, etc.
On the other hand, based on MEC edge intelligence, it has become a new trend to meet low latency requirements through on-demand deployment. Through independent research and development of customized networks, AI computing power is lowered to realize intelligent applications such as industrial vision, robot control, and AI quality inspection.
Tan Hua finally concluded that there are four typical requirements for the application of 5G industry, namely production safety requirements, cost reduction and efficiency enhancement requirements, innovation empowerment requirements, and people-oriented requirements. Steady entry into the era of industrial digitalization.
The commercial prospects of 5G and unmanned technology in the mining industry
Ma Wei, Chairman of Sany Smart Mining and Tencent Cloud TVP Industry Ambassador, delivered a keynote speech entitled "The Commercial Prospects of 5G and Unmanned Technology in the Mining Industry". He started with the intelligent transformation of mines, the application of 5G technology in underground mines, open-pit mines, and the future prospects of smart mines, and popularized relevant knowledge for the participants.
Ma Wei first introduced the current situation of the traditional mining industry to the participants. He pointed out: harsh environment, frequent mining accidents, and severe production safety situation; urgent need for operating costs and improving management efficiency; serious faults in employees and difficulty in recruiting; Low performance and so on are common industry pain points.
It is also under such conditions that through the guidance of policies and the introduction of emerging technologies, the large bandwidth, low latency, wide connection and other characteristics of 5G technology have laid a solid foundation for creating innovative applications for smart mines and helping the transformation and upgrading of the mining industry. Basic, intelligent transformation is the only way for the development of the mining industry. On the one hand, the shortage of labor needs to be solved, and on the other hand, it is also an inherent requirement for the transformation and upgrading of the coal industry.
Next, Ma Wei introduced the specific applications of 5G technology in underground mining and open-pit mining scenarios:
- Underground mining: collaborative operation above and below the well. Taking advantage of the large bandwidth of 5G, through mining 5G mobile phones, smart headlights, etc., underground personnel can make 4K ultra-high-definition video calls with managers and technicians in the dark environment anytime, anywhere, and help the technicians in the mine to see the details of underground production. Improve management and technical support efficiency. Build a 5G+ fully mechanized mining intelligent working face. The working face data is aggregated in the centralized control center, and the remote operation of the working face shearer, hydraulic support, and three-machine equipment is realized through the 5G network, and the monitoring data and video of the working face are returned.
- Open-pit mine: Deploy 5G+ intelligent mining, 5G+ dispatching system, 5G+ intelligent control and other applications by realizing the 5G network coverage of the mineral processing area and the mining area command and dispatch center in the mining area. The low-latency characteristics of the 5G network enable unmanned and remote control of electric dump trucks, wide-body vehicles, excavators and other equipment in open-pit mining farms under the condition that controls can be interacted with each other. The 5G+ intelligent management and control platform realizes the intelligence of workload statistics, fault data statistics, equipment fuel consumption statistics, personnel attendance statistics, etc., which greatly improves the efficiency of production and transportation, ensures the safety of personnel operations, and truly reduces costs and increases efficiency for enterprises.
Ma Wei concluded that the intelligentization of equipment in the mining area is only the first step. Only by building a cloud-based platform can the mine be dispatched intelligently. 5G technology is a key to the transition from "end" to "cloud". At present, Sany Mine has also reached an in-depth cooperation with Tencent Cloud to jointly promote the construction of unmanned mines.
At the end of the sharing, Ma Wei summed up the future prospects of smart mines from the height of the industry. From product portraits to killer features, the future smart mines must not only solve the stubborn problems of the industry, but also create opportunities and value.
Technical challenges and application practice of unmanned driving in ports
Yang Zheng, co-founder and CTO of Feibu Technology and Tencent Cloud TVP industry ambassador, gave a keynote speech entitled "Technical Challenges and Application Practices of Unmanned Driving in Ports". He started from the pain points of the industry, the development history of smart ports, and the technical challenges in the process of unmanned landing at the terminal, and combined with Feibu technology solutions and application cases, he made a nuanced analysis for the participants.
Yang Zheng first shared with the participants the three major pain points of the port industry:
- Safety issues: The speed of vehicles during port operations is limited to 30-40 km/h, and the environment is monotonous, coupled with a large proportion of waiting situations, which can easily make drivers feel tired and fatigued, and eventually induce dangerous driving behaviors.
- Manpower problems: mainly focus on the long period of obtaining an A2 driver's license, the high intensity of three-shift work, and the poor working conditions, resulting in fewer and fewer young people willing to take up the profession of port drivers.
- Efficiency issues: The site selection and construction of the wharf is closely related to the economic consumption level of the coastline and hinterland. It is necessary to further explore the space for improving efficiency to meet the growing demand for transportation capacity. The traditional terminal lacks digital operation thinking, highly relies on manual scheduling, emphasizes personal experience and single-handedness of bicycles, and cannot achieve global optimization.
Against such a background, the state has successively issued a number of documents such as the Outline for Building a Powerful Country in Transportation, Guiding Opinions on Building World-Class Ports, and Outline of the National Comprehensive Three-dimensional Transportation Network Planning, clearly proposing to “build first-class facilities and first-class technology”. , first-class management, first-class service", "to build a world-class port that is safe, convenient, smart, green, cost-effective, powerful, and world-class." Compared with the automated terminal construction schemes originated in Western countries in the 1990s, intelligent schemes based on trucks and IGVs have low cost, low environmental dependence, strong independent planning, strong fault tolerance and high growth. Advantages, it is more in line with the needs of intelligent transformation and upgrading of ports including traditional terminals, and accelerates the promotion of domestic coastal container terminals to implement autonomous driving horizontal transportation and other businesses. However, in the actual application process, there are still some technical challenges to be solved, including:
- Mixed line scenario: There is a large stock of traditional terminals, and the mixed line condition accounts for a large proportion. When carrying out autonomous driving horizontal transportation in a traditional mixed-line terminal characterized by “operation and reconstruction at the same time”, unmanned trucks conduct high-frequency interactions with a wide range of subjects including manned trucks, service engineering vehicles, and strapping workers, etc. . And some classic scenarios like unprotected left turns are also very common.
- Positioning interference: Large-scale metal operation equipment in the port will bring continuous interference and shielding effects to the positioning signal of the unmanned truck; in addition, the port operating conditions have extremely strict requirements on the operation accuracy of the unmanned truck.
In response to these challenges and problems, Yang Zheng said that the key to the solution is to create a scalable vehicle-side driverless system that requires it to be autonomous, controllable, and optimizable. In this regard, Feibu has realized the full-stack technology coverage from perception and positioning to decision-making planning and control in the unmanned system, and accelerated the iterative optimization of the system based on the real environment data of the port. At the same time, for the fully unmanned operation scenario of removing security officers, Feibu Technology and Tencent Cloud have cooperated to create a 5G remote intelligent driving system, which is based on low-bandwidth and low-latency high-definition video transmission to achieve safe takeover in emergency situations.
Major domestic container terminals have basically completed the technical verification of autonomous driving horizontal transportation. The second half of the smart port construction has moved towards the deep-water area of "efficiency enhancement". The port industry has pain points such as obvious fluctuations in tidal operations, excessive reliance on traditional experience, and low degree of coordination in design and configuration. Digital collaborative operations based on big data + artificial intelligence are needed to achieve accurate business supply and demand matching and controllable global operation efficiency. Yang Zheng proposed that the future development direction of smart ports will focus on "full unmanned driving, full scene perception, and full link scheduling". Feibu Technology solves the problem of blind spots in the field of vision of unmanned trucks and provides over-the-horizon perception through road-side intelligent perception computing; through the cloud dispatch management platform, it achieves full-link management of all vehicles and equipment, and eliminates individual greed. The global efficiency is optimal.
At the end of the sharing, Yang Zheng also introduced the commercialization progress of Feibu technology solutions. Among them, the Meidong Wharf of Ningbo Zhoushan Port, as a typical example of the transformation of traditional wharfs, has created a global market for multi-channel marshalling and real ship operations under mixed line conditions. The largest autonomous driving truck operation fleet; Nantong Port Lvsi Operation Area represents the application of vehicle-road-cloud integration in the newly built port. The two major cases helped the participants to understand the construction details of the smart port more clearly.

Roundtable Dialogue | 5G + Internet of Vehicles, how far is the unmanned future?
This roundtable dialogue is based on "5G + Internet of Vehicles, how far is the unmanned future? " as the theme, hosted by Zhai You, director of the Industrial Security Center of Tencent Research Institute, and invited Lu Weiqi, founder and CEO of Next Engine, and Tencent Cloud TVP industry ambassador; Zhang Chuanchuan, senior architect of Tencent Cloud 5G products; Han Yunbo, Tencent Cloud 5G smart transportation expert, participated in the dialogue.
Changes, challenges and opportunities brought by 5G to the Internet of Vehicles
Lu Weiqi: I have been personally engaged in the application of the Internet of Vehicles in the field of smart cockpits, and have gone through the era changes from 2G to 5G. For the field of smart cockpit, we can find that its applications are becoming more and more abundant. In the era of human-driven, smart cockpits put more emphasis on safety. With the rapid development of new energy vehicles and smart cars, the application of 5G technology in the field of smart cockpits has broad opportunities and potential scenarios. The car has evolved from a simple driving tool. In the future, we can watch videos in the car, immerse games, combine AR and other applications, and even evolve into a mobile office. These are all imaginations in the future.
Zhang Chuanchuan: From a product point of view, the audio and video transmission and interaction from the car to the cloud will become more abundant in the future. At present, based on the capabilities of Tencent Cloud's audio and video, we are already working with some car companies to make innovative application layouts including remote parking and in-vehicle live broadcast. In addition, I would like to add two points. One is the low latency of 5G, which brings the possibility of remote control and remote assisted driving; the other is the integration of 5G cloud and network, which makes edge computing possible and brings lower latency. and edge intelligence to truly realize network integration, thereby promoting the development of smart cars and the Internet of Vehicles.
Han Yunbo: I will briefly share some of the things I encountered in the application landing. Remote driving and remote control are closely related to the uplink application of 5G. If we want to evolve towards commercial operation and large-scale implementation, we must consider the problem of uplink pressure on intersection base stations in the future and solve the uplink capacity requirement. On the other hand, weather such as heavy rain will also affect the speed and signal quality of 5G, so future solutions should not only consider the improvement of 5G technology, but also consider the linkage between the network and the application, so that the application layer can also predict the outside world in advance In order to realize the commercialization of new applications such as remote driving, do a good job of deployment.
Wang Mingming: During the epidemic, GAC participated in the delivery of anti-epidemic materials. The more interesting point is that if the car is driven by a human, entering and leaving the epidemic area needs to be repeatedly disinfected, the process is cumbersome and the efficiency is low, while the unmanned car is much easier. We have further developed this year for remote driving scenarios, such as adding new commands such as remote opening of the trunk, opening and closing doors and windows, etc., to facilitate loading and unloading of goods. We don’t want the epidemic to happen. It is also a good thing if it can be empowered by means of technology and provide more possibilities to help the society. How far is it from true unmanned?
Wang Mingming: Whether it is L2, L3 or L4 unmanned driving, it is difficult to clearly define the responsibilities of people and systems. In the actual implementation process, what we consider is the scenario, which scenario solves which problem, and what value does it bring to customers. L3 is usually for ordinary consumer scenarios, and L4 is for limited areas such as mines and ports, or for operational scenarios such as robotaxi. As for unmanned driving, I personally think that real unmanned driving is not that simple. 5G only solves the problem of communication links, but the autonomous driving technology itself still has many challenges in environmental perception and obstacle behavior prediction. Within a limited area, the vehicle operating environment is relatively controllable, such as ports and mines. However, on the road of an open society, data still needs to be spoken. Under the constraints of limited scope and working conditions, it has a certain operational stability, and then gradually implements it.
Lu Weiqi: I agree with Mr. Wang’s point of view. I personally think that the first stage of unmanned driving is a scenario-based application, which solves efficiency problems and the surrounding environment is controllable. In the second stage, L2 and L3 can be used as auxiliary driving to help the driver reduce the burden. This stage should develop rapidly for a long time in the future, but the division of responsibilities after an accident is also a big problem. There may also be a class of scenarios, such as the taxi field, which may be an application scenario before the real entry into unmanned driving, which can be tried by mixing lines on some roads.
Han Yunbo: From a policy point of view, in 2000, the discussion on the handling of insurance claims after an accident occurred in autonomous driving, and now the "Regulations on the Administration of Intelligent Connected Vehicles in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone" issued by Shenzhen has provided certain support. and interpretation, which is positive. On the other hand, the data security, storage and cloud transmission involved in the Internet of Vehicles business also cover the formulation of dozens or hundreds of policies and standards. From a technical point of view, we can push some things, but there is still a lot of room for improvement in certain scenarios.
Zhang Chuanchuan: I would like to add that in the operation scenarios mentioned by the previous teachers, we are working with partners such as Sany Mine and Feibu Technology from Tencent's industrial chain to make real-time audio and video based on Tencent's 5G capabilities. Exploration of remote assisted driving. The main purpose is to accelerate the disembarkation of safety officers through the remote assisted driving system, and promote the realization of real commercial unmanned driving in operating scenarios such as mines and ports, which is the key.
Finally, the panelists also had in-depth discussions on topics such as 5G+ IoV's industrial ecology, bringing participants a point-to-face global input. Moderator Zhai You said that 5G technology is closely related to the Internet of Vehicles and autonomous driving. This field does not only depend on a certain link, but involves all aspects of technology and industry. I believe that online participants can also get some inspiration from it. Conclusion Just as the emergence of container technology ignited the fire of the microservice architecture, cloud-native technology has become popular, and 5G technology may also be a big opportunity behind the change in terms of unmanned driving. The entanglement of laws and regulations, industry standards, technical capabilities, and ethics has made unmanned driving go through cycles and difficulties in the process of landing. The high-speed, wide-connection, and low-latency characteristics brought by 5G technology, combined with industrial innovation Application is the direct train to the future.
Unmanned driving technology, on the surface, liberates a single driver, but behind it is the efforts made by thousands of technicians with the intention of benefiting everyone with technology, just like TVP's "influence with technology" at the beginning of its establishment. The original intention of the world" is generally the same. In the days to come, TVP still hopes to use every technology sharing, so that you can achieve "unmanned driving" on the road to develop technological cognition, because it is the technical experts of the entire industry who guide the way forward.
