OpenYurt invites you to the 2022 EdgeX China Challenge!

On August 3, 2022, the 3rd EdgeX China Challenge hosted by LF Edge officially opened. Alibaba Cloud, as a strategic partner of this competition, made a major appearance, hoping to use its leading open source cloud-native edge computing intelligence platform OpenYurt and EdgeX. Foundry's continuous in-depth cooperation will jointly build a learning and sharing platform for the Internet of Things and edge computing for developers, solve technical problems in the industry with an open source and shared technical environment, and promote the application and deployment of cloud-native edge computing and AIoT.

With the further evolution of IoT applications, more and more practical scenarios require local data storage, privacy protection, low transmission delay, and low cost. Edge computing technology has developed rapidly. The increasing computing scale and business complexity have also put forward new demands on a series of capabilities such as edge computing efficiency, reliability, and resource utilization. The unique advantages of cloud-native technology make it possible to solve the above challenges.

Built on native Kubernetes, OpenYurt was open sourced by Alibaba Cloud in May 2020, and was selected into the CNCF SandBox project in September of the same year. It is the industry's first non-intrusive edge computing cloud-native open source platform for Kubernetes. OpenYurt is good at realizing unified management and operation and maintenance of cloud and edge resources in a non-invasive way, so that edge nodes have the same capabilities as the cloud.

Since 2021, the OpenYurt community and EdgeX Foundry have made key progress in jointly building a cloud-native standard for IoT device twins and object models, providing unified capabilities for edge cloud resource interfaces, and improving the software-hardware integrated delivery model.

At the opening ceremony of the 2022 EdgeX China Challenge, Hu Weiqi, senior technical expert of Alibaba Cloud and head of middleware R&D, said: "Cloud-edge collaboration is becoming an important driving force for the digital transformation of industries such as transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, and energy. Today, Edge computing is facing more stringent requirements for performance and efficiency. The emergence of cloud-native edge computing can well make up for the agile requirements of the edge for fast data processing and fast iterative updates.

"For a long time, Alibaba Cloud and Intel engineers have been exploring, innovating and practicing in related fields, and actively cooperated with the OpenYurt and EdgeX Foundry open source communities to jointly promote the establishment of cloud-edge collaboration standards and provide cloud-native management for enterprise edge devices. The large-scale implementation of capabilities provides the optimal path. I hope that through this competition, more enterprises and developers can learn about the two projects, and help enterprises to carry out business innovation faster and more agilely in edge computing scenarios.”

It is reported that this competition is divided into two tracks, namely the medical/education/consumer industry track and the energy/industry/supply chain industry track. The judges of the competition will score the stable entries based on three dimensions: creativity, feasibility and practicality, and landing ability. In addition to the basic score, if additional open source components, such as OpenYurt, are used in the contestant's plan, additional scores will be awarded, and the additional scores will be included in the total evaluation score. At the same time, each open source component will be awarded independently, and the supporter of the corresponding open source component will provide a review and determine the winner list. The winners will receive a maximum reward of 50,000 yuan.

In order to help contestants better understand and use related technologies, this competition will continue to carry out multiple rounds of technical training from July to September covering different levels of elementary, middle and advanced levels. The technical experts of the organization share, help developers systematically learn intelligent edge computing, cloud native system knowledge, and understand how to better realize cloud-edge collaboration based on open source projects such as OpenYurt+EdgeX.
