On Thursday, Akamai, the world's largest CDN (content delivery network) provider, failed, causing a massive Internet outage that lasted up to an hour. A large number of commonly used websites, apps and Internet services such as PSN, Steam, banks, Airbnb, Fidelity, etc. were affected, and many airline websites were affected, including Delta, British Airways, and Southwest Airlines. The real-time map of the online website speed detection tool Pingdom showed that the outage had a global impact.

An incident report issued by Akamai shows that there is a problem with its Edge DNS service. Edge DNS is designed to ensure the safe and smooth operation of websites, apps and services.

At present, the problem has been resolved and related services have been restored.

Banks, games, aviation, media, etc. are all affected

The affected websites include bank websites, securities companies, game services, airline websites, etc. During the service interruption, users cannot access services such as Ally Bank, Fidelity, Sony PSN, and Airbnb. The websites of Delta, British Airways, and Southwest Airlines either crash or cannot use important functions such as boarding.

Among them, game services were severely affected. The network condition detection website DownDetector released a report stating that more than 40,000 users had problems using PSN, and the Steam store also had functional problems. In addition, games such as "Fortnite" and "Call of Duty" have problems. The Sony PSN status page shows: PlayStation Network is experiencing external Internet problems, which may affect your experience.

The cause of the accident was a software configuration update that triggered a bug, not a network attack

As for the cause of the accident, Akamai said via Twitter:

The software configuration update triggered a bug in the DNS system, resulting in a service interruption, which in turn affected the availability of Akamai customers' websites. The interruption lasted for one hour. After the software configuration update was rolled back, the service returned to normal. Akamai confirmed that the incident was not related to a cyber attack.
