Gemini 2.5 Launched and Improved: Google rolled out early versions of Gemini 2.5 this year, marking an improvement over 2.0. It felt competitive with ChatGPT but was initially experimental and later preview. At I/O 2025, it became generally available and will be integrated with Chrome. There's a new subscription plan.
- 2.5 Goes Gold: The older 2.0 Flash was default till now. Now 2.5 Flash is the new default with built-in simulated reasoning and more reliable outputs. It uses 20–30% fewer tokens than the preview version and is live in Vertex AI, AI Studio, and the Gemini app. The Pro model shed its preview title and got Deep Think for better reasoning. Both 2.5 models have adjustable thinking budgets and summaries. Gemini Live started on mobile devices and has a future "agentic" capability.
Gemini Ultra is Expensive: Google previously had a $20 monthly plan. Now it offers Gemini Ultra for $250 per month, more than ChatGPT Pro. It includes all models with higher usage limits, immediate access to Gemini in Chrome and a new agentic model. There's a 50% discount for the first three months.
Gemini Diffusion: Google is experimenting with Gemini Diffusion for faster image generation. It works by starting with random noise and denoising it to create more accurate outputs. It's 2.5 times faster than Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite and claims to have previously unheard-of accuracy in complex math and coding. It's in the experimental stage and Google DeepMind is accepting applications to test it.
Google's Future AI: I/O was mainly about Gemini, but Google has more in store.
