AWS has announced the general availability of AWS Transform, an agentic AI service. It aims to accelerate and de-risk the modernization of enterprise mainframe and VMware workloads. The service uses generative AI to automate legacy system assessment, planning, and transformation.

• For Mainframe: It provides a multi-agent AI architecture to analyze mainframe codebases, decompose them, and modernize IBM z/OS applications to Java. It aims to accelerate the multi-year mainframe modernization journey with capabilities like code analysis, documentation, and logic extraction. It's available in the US East (N. Virginia) and Europe (Frankfurt) Regions.
• For VMware: It automates VMware workload migration and modernization, handling application discovery, dependency mapping, etc. in four phases through a collaborative web interface. It offers different availability options for data collection and migrations.
  However, Corey Quinn pointed out a new service term in the AWS service terms that requires users to run the transformed workload on AWS for a minimum of 24 months from the transformation completion date. There is also skepticism in the tech community about using an AI agent for mainframe modernization due to potential unforeseen issues and lack of guarantees. AWS currently provides core features for free to customers.
