• Background: It took [40,000+] commits to release the first major version (v1) of a photos app. The story started in 2020 when choosing between privacy and convenience for storing photos.
• Privacy: Based on end-to-end encryption, only the user can see photos. It's the foundation ensuring data privacy.
• Simplicity: Took a long time to achieve. Features like face recognition and search with end-to-end encryption were harder than expected. Included search (runs locally), discover (shows important people and past moments), and an icon-switcher.
• Reliability: Stores 3 copies of encrypted data in 3 clouds across 3 locations, one in an underground fallout shelter. Went to great lengths to ensure reliability.
• Availability: Available everywhere since the first public release.
• Other Features: Shipped many with community help, like links, family plans, guest view, and Legacy. Made data export easy with Desktop app and CLI.
• Fully Open Source: Can be run on one's own server in a minute.
