New Pebble OS Smartwatches: Two new smartwatches announced - Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2. Both run open source PebbleOS and are compatible with many Pebble apps.
- Core 2 Duo: Ultra crisp black and white display, polycarbonate frame, $149, ships in July. Similar to Pebble 2 with upgrades like 30-day battery life, new chips, etc.
- Core Time 2: Larger 64-color display, metal frame, $225, ships in December. Features a 64-color e-paper display, metal frame, various sensors, etc.
- Software and Features: Each watch runs PebbleOS, enabling baseline features. Existing 10,000+ watchfaces and apps will work with some adjustments. A companion mobile app is being developed for Android and iOS, along with an updated SDK.
- Availability and Pre-order: Sold exclusively through [store.rePebble.com]. Limited supply, recommend pre-ordering. Refund available until shipment.
- Project Progress: Core 2 Duo is far along with testing and firmware development. Core Time 2 is in prototype stage. Progress made possible by early product development and finding Pebble 2 components.
- Specification Reasons: Display selection is the primary constraint. Adding a touchscreen for "complications" on Core Time 2. Battery life increased due to Bluetooth chip improvements. Speaker for potential app use. No support for smartstraps.
- Who Shouldn't Get One: Not for those needing a perfectly polished smartwatch with no rough edges or delayed features. Not a fitness or sports watch. Not comparable to Apple Watch as 3rd party watches have restrictions on iOS.
