HYTRADBOI 2025 事后分析

  • Conference Details: Ran a conference at [https://www.hytradboi.com/2025/], which went better than the previous one at [https://www.scattered-thought...].

    • Talks: Didn't have a call for talks. Cold-emailed 51 speakers, with 31 accepting, 1 maybe, 8 declining, and 11 not replying. 32 talks initially planned but 6 withdrew before deadline, 12 submitted on time, 14 were late (2 the day before, 1 the day after), and 3 extra speakers volunteered. Made an info page with encoding advice and a form.
    • Lightning Talks: Called for them with no space constraints. Accepted 10, rejected 1 (a scrolling readme), and asked 1 to fix a technical issue.
    • Marketing: Made accounts on bluesky, mastodon, twitter, and a buttondown newsletter to spread the word. Had issues with twitter bugs.
    • Tickets: Sold using stripe payment links, with a pay-what-you-want option and a suggested price of $64. Sold 481 tickets at various prices totaling 20,434 USD or 28,941 CAD. Expenses similar to last time. Sold tickets directly to a chat invite link this time instead of via email.
    • Video: Transcribed everything on descript, with some bugs. Hosted videos and captions on the bunny cdn, which is cheaper but less reliable. Got complaints about audio quality.
    • Chat: Ran on zulip. Made channels for announcements, etc. Bought a $1000 flat fee support plan. Feedback was mostly positive but some had issues with conversation organization.
    • Live: The conference mostly went smoothly with one zulip hiccup fixed quickly. Many speakers didn't show up to Q&A. Chat was very busy initially then tapered off. Median talk had ~100 views. People mostly watched bunny videos.
  • Next Steps: Thinks of online conferences as solving a coordination problem. People mostly enjoyed it but wanted better signposting. Not sure if to do another, may make it a rolling event every 3 months and run it for free.
