与蒙娜丽莎设计师聊天

  • Published Information: Published on 2025-02-19 to joshleeb's blog.
  • Last Post: Investigated shaping ligatures for monospace fonts in last post, using MonoLisa font designed by Marcus Sterz.

    • Font Design: Marcus started designing typefaces 14 years ago. MonoLisa was his first monospace font for code. Project started after meeting Juho Vepsäläinen and Andrey Okonetchnikov. Font designed monospace-first with primary use in editors and dev tooling. Not created by adjusting proportional fonts. Noticed geometric rigidity and spartan design in technical environments, inspired by JetBrains Mono. Wanted softer, more organic design. Contrast with coding environment noticed. Prioritized functionality over looks. Inpsired by Humanist Typefaces like Frutiger and Operator Mono.
    • Handling Ligatures: Ligature glyphs sometimes followed by spacing glyphs to handle width exceeding monospace font. Marcus confirmed this but it's not a standard convention. Initially spacers came after ligature glyph, but after issues with editors, they were placed before ligature like in Fira Code. Controlling spacer appearance handled by a script by Rainer Scheichelbauer.
  • What's Coming Next: Team continues to work on MonoLisa with updates every 2-4 months and meets at least every two weeks to discuss improvements from Github discussions. Marcus shared they are working on something exciting related to proportions.
  • Conclusion: Joshleeb thanks Marcus for the chat and answering questions, and Juho for reaching out. Excited to see the next steps for MonoLisa and the team.
