Survey Overview: Guix User and Contributor Survey (2024) results presented in a series of posts. 943 full responses, 53% from users, 32% from contributors.
Guix Usage:
- On top of another Linux distro: Package manager (48%), Dotfiles (17%), Isolated dev (41%), Package own (28%), Deployment (13%), Guix System (15%).
- On Guix System: Package manager (64%), Dotfiles (48%), Isolated dev (36%), Package own (40%), Deployment (19%).
- Insights: Many users manage packages declaratively. Guix Home popular on Guix System. Guix Shell widely used. Many users package own software. Deployment tools least used.
Guix System Usage:
- Deployment types: Graphical desktop in VM (29%), on laptop (73%), server on hardware (24%), in VM (18%), in container (6%), public cloud (6%), other (4%).
- Insights: Most users use Guix as a graphical desktop. Third use it as a server. Deployment tools could increase server usage. Few use in containers or cloud.
Architectures: x86_64 most popular (98%), followed by AArch64 (19%), IA-32 (3%), ARM v7 (4%), POWER9 (2%), IA-32 with GNU/Hurd (1%).
Proprietary Drivers: Majority of Guix users use proprietary drivers (66% use Nonguix with Guix System, 49% on other distros).
Other Applications: Use multiple methods to install apps. 64% use Nonguix channel. 47% have their own Guix channel.
Overall Satisfaction: 70% satisfied or very satisfied. Neutral (19%) could be an area for improvement. Biggest issues: runtime performance (48%), missing services (40%), shortage of guides (39%), error messages (39%), no drivers (33%).
Limiters of Satisfaction: Areas include tool UX, declarative config, missing services, hardware drivers, runtime performance, doc, guides, error messages. Many comments in "Other" category.
What Should Guix Improve: Top priorities: Performance and tuning, make Guix easier to learn (more docs), make latest package versions available, more packages, package reliability, hardware support.
Guix Sustainability: About 50% of users willing to financially support Guix. 30% unable.
Love Guix: 65% of participants wrote about what they love about Guix, including community, Scheme, reproducibility, etc.
Key Insights: High user satisfaction. Different usage patterns on hosted and Guix System. Users want improvements. Many willing to donate.
