This is due to many vital legacy systems developed with these "dinosaur" languages. The TIOBE Index is an indicator of programming language popularity based on skilled engineers, courses, and third-party vendors, and is updated monthly. It's not about the best language or most lines of code.
• Top 20 Programming Languages in March 2025: Python is at the top with a 23.85% rating and a +8.22% increase. C++ is second with 11.08% and a +0.37% rise. Java is third with 10.36% and a +1.41% increase. C is fourth with 9.53% and a -1.64% change. C# is fifth with 4.87% and a -2.67% drop. JavaScript is sixth with 3.46% and a +0.08% increase. Go is seventh with 2.78% and a +1.22% rise. SQL is eighth with 2.57% and a +0.65% increase. Visual Basic is ninth with 2.52% and a +1.09% growth. Delphi/Object Pascal is tenth with 2.15% and a +0.94% rise.
• Other Programming Languages: The complete top 50 includes Ruby, Prolog, Lisp, Perl, Classic Visual Basic, Swift, SAS, Scala, (Visual) FoxPro, Dart, Haskell, VBScript, Lua, Julia, Objective-C, GAMS, TypeScript, Transact-SQL, ABAP, PL/SQL, Solidity, PowerShell, D, Bash, RPG, ML, X++, Elixir, Awk, and Zig.
• Very Long Term History: Shows the positions of top 10 programming languages over the years. There's a difference between "Visual Basic" and "(Visual) Basic", and SQL was added in 2018.
