  • Release Info: GNOME 48, named "Bengaluru", is introduced in March 2025 after six months of community work. It pays tribute to GNOME Asia 2024 organizers.
  • Notification Stacking: Groups notifications from the same app into stacks, expandable to reveal individual messages. Keeps list organized, prevents it from getting too long. It's part of notifications improvements after GNOME 47.
  • Performance Improvements: Includes dynamic triple buffering for smoother screen changes with fewer skipped frames and more fluid animations. Other improvements like reduced CPU and memory usage in JavaScript engine, less memory usage in file indexing, improved performance for monitors attached to discrete graphics cards, faster folder load and scroll rendering in Files, and faster app interface creation and resizing.
  • Enhanced Image Viewer: Gets a new default image viewer with a new image editing feature (cropping, rotating, flipping), redesigned zoom controls (single click to default zoom, menu for predefined levels, manual entry), and experimental features like RAW image and XMP metadata support.
  • New Fonts: Has a new interface font (Adwaita Sans) and a new monospace font (Adwaita Mono), with better rendering, more extensive character coverage, and support for modern font features.
  • Digital Wellbeing: Features like Screen Time Usage, Screen Limits (set daily screen time limit and get notifications), and Break Reminders (set regular eyesight and movement breaks) in the Settings app.
  • Preserve Battery Health: Allows limiting battery charge to 80% when plugged in to enhance battery lifespan. Available in Power settings on supported hardware.
  • New Audio Player App: A minimalist app for playing audio files with a clean interface, waveform display, playback speed control, and focused on individual file playback without library or playlist functionality.
  • Timezone Support in Calendar: Allows creating events with specific timezones, viewing and changing timezones when editing events, and is part of a wider Calendar overhaul with over 40 UX improvements and bug fixes.
  • HDR Support: Introduces system-level HDR support. Enable it in display settings. There's a software emulated brightness control as display brightness can't be controlled when HDR is on.
  • Updated Text Editor: Gets a cleaner interface with a streamlined header bar, enhanced document properties, and relocated cursor position indicator for code editing.
  • Other Changes: Global shortcuts for apps, default window placement in the center of the screen, enhanced support for special function keys, improved Contacts UI, refined Settings, correct Orca screen reader shortcuts on Wayland, refined app interfaces, Maps modernization, and accessibility support in Web.
  • GNOME Circle: Shows a collection of outstanding apps like Drum Machine, Iotas, Keypunch, and Exercise Timer.
  • Developer Experience: Offers new features and enhancements for developers in the developer section.
