威瑞森收购 LQD WiFi,一家建造城市智能枢纽的公司

  • Verizon's Move with Smart Hubs: Verizon is set to make its presence known with beacon-like smart hubs. It has acquired LQD WiFi, a NYC-based startup.

    • LQD WiFi's Product - Palo: Palo is a kiosk system that offers free Wi-Fi, community and location info, and emergency alerts to city dwellers. Its renderings are similar to Link NYC kiosks.
  • Background of Palo and Link NYC:

    • LQD WiFi's Founder: Randy Ramusack worked at Microsoft Switzerland and UK before starting LQD WiFi.
    • Link NYC's Operator: Operated by CityBridge including Google's Sidewalk Labs' Intersection project, Qualcomm, and CIVIQ Smartscapes. There are currently Link NYC kiosks in most boroughs with more planned.
    • Testing Link NYC Kiosk: Tested one kiosk a few months ago, which worked well with Google Maps directions and free Wi-Fi. But it had to disable web-browsing due to "lewd acts" reports.
  • Differences between Palo and Link NYC: Link NYC has a tablet for searching, while Palo has 46-inch LCD touchscreens with interactive transit maps, schedules, and public safety info.
  • Verizon's IoT Purchases: LQD WiFi isn't Verizon's first IoT acquisition. It has bought Sensity Systems (smart LED lights), Telogis (connected cars), and Fleetmatics (workforce management), etc.
  • Bringing Kiosks to Cities: It will take time for Verizon and LQD WiFi to bring these kiosks to multiple cities. New Rochelle, NY is the first to partner, and the financial details of the acquisition are undisclosed.
