• Python Standalone Builds (PBS) Project: Provides self-contained Python distributions aiming to work easily. Used by uv, Rye, Bazel's rules_python, etc. with over 70,000,000 downloads of GitHub release artifacts.
• Charlie Marsh and Astral: With ruff and uv, they speedran building world-class tooling for the Python ecosystem. Since March, there have been over 50 million downloads of PBS release assets.
• Transition to Astral: Astral employees have stepped up, contributing various functionalities like Python 3.13 support, automated release publishing, and debug symbol stripped builds. Multiple Astral employees now have GitHub permissions. PBS is effectively an Astral maintained project since April.
• Transfer of Ownership: On 2024-12-17, indygreg/python-build-standalone will be transferred to the astral-sh GitHub organization. The author will retain GitHub permissions and hope to be a periodic advisor. Astral has shown competency and the author has no doubt PBS will thrive under their stewardship.
