Fedora Linux Installer (Anaconda) Overview: Anaconda has been around for 25 years and is a reliable installer for Fedora Linux and other distributions. It has some complexity and jargon issues, so a major update is in progress to make it more user-friendly, especially for newcomers.
- Why a new interface: The current GTK-based installer design uses a “hub-and-spoke” approach that can be confusing. The new interface is designed to be more streamlined, guiding users through the installation process step-by-step with good defaults.
- Task-oriented design: The reimagined Anaconda aims to handle different installation scenarios easily, such as using the entire disk, sharing with another OS in a dual-boot mode, reinstalling Fedora, and custom partitions.
Changing the Anaconda Experience: Anaconda has always used GTK, but it's old and showing its age. The team modularized Anaconda to enable independent interface changes and took advantage of Cockpit's web-based interface and widget set (PatternFly) instead. Using a web-based UI has several benefits, including easier updates, testing, and community contributions.
Room to Grow: There are plans to expand the storage configuration screen to provide more features, such as remote installations, small-screen support, and different filesystem configurations. Additional features like a built-in terminal, log viewer, and improved accessibility are also in the works.
Details about the new storage concepts: The new web UI version uses a top-down approach. Users can choose to use the entire disk, share with another OS, select a flexible layout based on existing partitions, or use an external tool or “Storage Editor” to set up partitions. There is also a “reinstall method” for existing Fedora installations.
Screencast demos: There are screencasts showing different installation scenarios using the new Anaconda Web UI.
Ready to try it out: A test ISO is available for users to try out the new Web UI installer. Instructions are provided for setting up the test ISO on a virtual machine or physical hardware. Keep in mind that it's a Workstation live image in English only, with text still being refined.
