- February last year: Wrote about running a FreeBSD desktop and concluded the need to tinker.
Recently: Started tinkering with Alpine Linux. It's been recommended for years and is being checked out now.
- Potted history: An independent, non-commercial Linux distro for power users, with small footprint and proactive security features. Older than realized and popular in various systems. Also a base for Linux containers.
- Installation: Comes in different versions. Downloaded Xen ISO and booted/installed on a VM. Simple install process with basic setup questions and choices of SSH servers and ntp clients. Can configure LVM or use standard
syspartitions withext4. - Post-install and exploration: Booting shows
dmesg(1)with OpenRC. Bundled with musl and busybox. llvm and MirBSD Korn shell also available. - Packages: Default package manager is
apk. Configuration in/etc/apk/repositories. Easy to use, similar toapt install. Installedzfswith two commands.
- Conclusion: Barely scratched the surface but seriously considering it as the primary Linux distro for testing and servers. Loves OpenRC, simple package management and configuration. Interested in
