• NotebookLM is Google's good generative AI implementation, enabling exploration with Gemini AI model. Last year, it added generating "audio overviews" of source material. Now, it's testing bringing those to search results.
• The feature is in search labs and you need to manually enable it. Anyone can opt in. When joined, an embedded player appears in search results below the "People also ask" section.
• Google doesn't generate audio automatically; you click generate. After a few seconds, you get a conversation between two AI voices summarizing search results, with a list of sources and speed control.
• Examples like "how do noise cancellation headphones work" show Audio Overviews. You can even search for "Google audio overviews" to hear about it.
• The overviews for simple topics are mostly accurate but there are more error opportunities as the AI summarizes search results. This is a problem seen with text AI Overviews before.
• Search is not the first expansion of Google's fake podcasts. Audio Overviews have also shown in Gemini Deep Research mode and Google Docs. With Google's AI feature advancement, we expect to see them in more places and they may invade search results soon.
