MNT 口袋改革:初印象

  • Received from Crowd Supply: A couple of weeks ago, received an item from a Crowd Supply crowd funding campaign.
  • About MNT: Been making “open source, accessible and modular” devices for years. Didn't get the original Reform laptop but followed the team's progress.
  • Pocket Reform: Chose the Hyper edition with a Piñatex sleeve, SSD and printed manual. Purple in color.
  • Unboxing and Initial Impressions: Posted a brief unboxing video. Machine is chunkily constructed, well built and solid. Fits in a small bag. Comes with a complete manual and schematic.
  • Keyboard and Trackball: Ortholinear keyboard with smaller keycaps, challenging to learn but doing well now. Nice and responsive trackball with easy-to-adjust backlit keys.
  • Screen: Excellent, bright and sharp. Impressed most so far.
  • Ports and Connectivity: Yet to use micro-HDMI connector. Used USB-C connections and micro SD slot. Industrial iX connector for ethernet is a good choice but needs a passive adapter.
  • Software: Runs Debian unstable from MMC with some customizations. Firmware for the system controller is being tweaked. Had issues with an NVMe SSD and temporarily bricked the machine. Forums and IRC are useful.
  • Future Plans: Receiving a modem / WWAN card for the second internal expansion slot. Learning the Sway desktop environment and organizing setup. Interested in using onboard I2C and other hardware options.
  • Update: Posted a “field test” on 26th August 2024 about using the Pocket outdoors.
