When Ubuntu 16.04 was released, similar expectations loomed, but it turned out to be an exciting and potentially the best release in recent memory.
Changes in Ubuntu 16.04:
- Removal of "Spyware": The default online search results feature, which was controversial for sending search terms to Canonical's servers, is now off by default. Users can turn it back on if they find it helpful.
- System Changes: Ubuntu now uses the systemd init system instead of Upstart. This is a significant change for LTS users and requires awareness. The Unity launcher can now be moved to the bottom of the screen, and Ubuntu's Software Center has been replaced by GNOME Software. Ubuntu also supports the simpler apt command alongside apt-get.
- Snap Packages: This is Ubuntu 16.04's biggest change. Snap packages create self-contained packages, solving version conflict problems and allowing users to install the latest software without worrying about system stability. Currently, there are few Snappy versions of desktop applications, but this is expected to change.
- Other Updates: Ubuntu 16.04 offers native support for ZFS (mainly for server and container users), uses the Ubuntu Linux Kernel 4.4.0-18.34 with improved hardware support, and has updates to the Unity desktop, including better theme support and integration with the Nautilus file manager.
- Ubuntu Flavors: Various Ubuntu flavors like Kubuntu with the new KDE Plasma 5 and Ubuntu MATE, a lightweight desktop option, have released impressive versions with long-term support. Ubuntu MATE's Software Boutique is also notable.
Canonical's Roadmap and Future: Canonical has plans for major changes with the Mir display server and Unity 8 desktop later this year, which will bring more transitions. However, Ubuntu 16.04 provides a stable base for users to wait out these changes. With five years of support and Snap packages, users may not need to update until 2021.
