在 Windows 3.11 发布 20 年后,林纳斯推出了“Linux for Workgroups”

  • Linus Torvalds and Linux 3.11 for Workgroups: A few years ago, Linus Torvalds discussed Linux version numbers and said he would call the next version 3.11 Linux for Workgroups. He wasn't joking as a release candidate of Linux 3.11 is now available and it's actually named so. It even has a Windows-themed boot icon with Linux's mascot penguin Tux holding a flag with an old Windows logo.
  • Past Linux version names: The name "Linux for Workgroups" follows whimsical past Linux version names like "Pink Farting Weasel," "Killer Bat of Doom," "Erotic Pickled Herring," and "Jeff Thinks I Should Change This, But To What?".
  • Features of Linux 3.11: The actual code of Linux 3.11 comes with improved support for Radeon power management features and support for Intel Rapid Start Technology.
  • Windows for Workgroups 3.11: It was released in August 1993, about two years after Torvalds created the Linux kernel. An update in 1994 allowed it to support TCP/IP networking without a third-party add-on. One commenter on Hacker News remembered being part of a Windows system install in 1993 and being amazed by Windows 3.11. Windows 3.11 lived a long life, surviving after Windows 95 and Windows XP. In November 2008, it was officially dead at the age of 15 and no longer sold for embedded licenses.
