10gen and EdX Collaboration: 10gen (behind MongoDB) teams with EdX to bring MongoDB training online and accelerate release of EdX's platform as open source.
- Free Training Courses: 10gen will release two free training courses for MongoDB - one for developers and one for DBA starting in October. They will have access to EdX's software and contribute back changes, including integrating MongoDB as a data store.
- Ultimate Goal: Provide all 10gen's training for free online and release the entire EdX platform under an open-source license. 10gen is an open source company with an open development model that EdX wants to emulate.
EdX Project: Harvard and MIT launched EdX in May with over $30 million commitment. MIT previewed the platform in March with a free basic course on electronics and circuits enrolling over 100,000 students but only 10,000 through midterm.
10gen's Training: 10gen has been providing on-site training at $1,500 per course. Lack of a formal certification program was hindering MongoDB adoption. In the last few days, 4,000 people signed up for the developer and DBA courses, showing pent-up demand for a certification program.
